132. No, they're pissed because it makes no sense...it's like if Harry Potter movies were randomly cast with all Indonesians...you don't have to be any particular ethnicity to say "wtf", because that is media racism much more blatant than we are used to, know what I mean?

Most racism in the media at least pretends to be subtle, but there is no way to justify this except: "Yea, it's racist, we didn't want to hire Asian kids". I haven't really got into the protests just because I'm waiting for there to be some sort of stupid excuse.

Either way, what does Prop 8 have to do with a bunch of Asian characters randomly getting turned white in a movie? I'm assuming you mean the gay rights issue, but you do realize that opposition to Prop 8 got a ton more press and funding? It's not like Prop 8 was an obscure issue by any means, it certainly was more publicized than the new Avatar movie.

And what do gay rights have to do with racism in the media, other than their both being included under the broad heading of "discrimination"?

Avatar isn't made up of Asians.

Wanna know why?

Because Avatar takes place on a completely different world. The ancient Chinese did not dress like that, and the Inuits did not have four-flippered penguins. There were no such things as flying bison.

Okay, fine, let's pretend say for a second that you're right, but even if looking Asian =/= being Asian, then wouldn't it still make sense to cast people who look Asian? To match the characters who, apparently, look Asian even though they're not?

You are correct, there is no continent called "Asia" in all of avatar, even if they are drawn as Asians. I suppose characters looking human /=! characters being human. Let's make the entire cast of avatar computer animated ducks and not expect people to say "wtf?!?!?!".

No, sorry. You can change them all to white kids but don't expect people not to wtf over it, especially since they've given no reason for it and the only reason that is apparent is blatant "I don't want to hire Asians" weirdness.

So does every other fantasy movie. Doesn't mean that something made off of a source material that has major Asian influences and Asian-looking characters doesn't mean that Asians shouldn't be cast in the roles.

EVERY fantasy movie made has had a majorly white cast. And, that doesn't bug me too much, because almost every fantasy movie that has been made is based off of European cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Shouldn't that mean that a movie made that is based off of Asian cultures, traditions, and beliefs than be cast with Asian people???

I mean, I personally think that Zuko and Aang could go either way. I think that my eleven year old [white] cousin looks a helluva lot more like Aang than any Asian kid I know. My main beef is with the casting of Sokka and Katara. No amount of tanning is going to make their skin the right shade! I am an actress of color. I look more like Katara than the white stick they have as her now! And, the a--hole they cast as Sokka is obviously racist himself, after the quote he slipped to US!

P.S. I AM an activist. Generally, I am more active in the Animal Rights arenas, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't piss me off that the only major actress that I look anything like is the girl who plays Neela on ER, and the character has a f--ing Brittish accent!!!!

Erm...what? Last I checked, Koreans wore hanboks (http://iroh.org/screencaps/ep22/ep22-113.png), many Asian countries use chopsticks, Chinese write in Chinese, wore queues after the Manchus took over, can practice kung fu (Ba Gua, Southern/Northern, etc.), Buddhism....you know, why am I even bothering? Listing every single Asian influence would not only take hours and hours, it would be pointless - they're in the show! Just as Lord of the Rings takes place in a fantasy world that draws from Medieval European cultures, Avatar takes place in, yes, a fantasy world, but one that draws from Asian cultures.
Sure, Tolkien's elves may dress in a way that no one in Europe has, exactly, but wouldn't you find it just a little odd if all of them were, say, North African? Or Indian?
