The gross gender stuff is kinda inherent in Chinese culture in general as far as I can tell.

Hell even the language is telling. The word for 'wife' is composed of two hanzi that mean 'wife' and 'child'. The word for husband is kinda 'ten foot' and 'man'. Like fuck off already.

That does seem to be the case, unfortunately. Though I'd say that comparatively speaking, The Untamed has less of it than other cdramas I've seen. I couldn't stomach Ashes of Love, Legend of the White Snake (the one on Netflix) and Eternal Love because of the gross gender stereotypes and general weirdness about female characters.

how? they're still entirely centered around whatever man they're attached to and then get killed off at some point after having no narrative purpose. i am at a loss as to how that's better than being the literal lead of a show who drives the narrative.

But I'm not comparing the female characters in The Untamed to a hypothetical "literal lead of the show who drives the narrative", I'm comparing them to female characters in other cdramas I've seen... you know, like I stated in my original comment.

I'm not disputing your right to have a beef with how women are portrayed in cdramas. But if you're going to engage me personally on the subject, you should probably read and respond to what I've actually said and not some theoretical argument that you pulled out of thin air.

and i'm disagreeing with you that the women in the untamed are better than the ones in those shows. or that the untamed women are somehow exempt from the 'gross gender role stuff' someone mentioned above.

them not being alive for more than 10 mins is why you think this, they don't get to BE characters before getting offed.

Yes it's inherent in most cultures in the world. We're discussing China where that is also the case. It's not racist to point out China's very real gender issues, just because other countries around the world also have gender issues.

Yeah, I hate arguments like that. Gross gender stuff is "inherent" to 99% of cultures around the world and every now and then cultures get the fuck over it. You could just as easily say "you can't write 'woman' without 'man' which shows how female subjugation is inherent to English language cultures".

Incidentally, I love The Untamed and don't think it's any worse than any other C-drama for these issues.

Maybe not racist, but definitely stupid to use words in the language as proof. The way thousands-of-years-old words are formed has fuckall to do with modern gender issues in any country, so using Chinese words to say "here's your proof of China's gender issues" is making a nonsequitur.

Yeah like... there are plenty of words in every language that, if you take a close look at their etymology, would have ...unfortunate implications. It's just not as easy to see at first glance. You can criticise sexism in Chinese culture all you want but the characters are a really dumb argument.

Proof. Give me a break. It's a nuance of Mandarin that made me go 'oh give me a break'. I don't actually need to prove anything. The gender issues in China are well known and well documented. It may not be the only country with those issues but that doesn't make the very real problems there disappear.

As we all know, only China has gross gender stuff, here in the west we're far too Cultured for that shit and there's no societal baggage or bullshit women have to wade through while growing up. We're just evolved beyond that.
