I recently got into The Untamed and reblogged a shitton of stuff on tumblr about it, and was so afraid I was doing this to someone that I threw it all in a queue that's going to take months to run out and tagged it so at least people could blacklist if they needed to

(Anonymous) 2021-07-06 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been on Tumblr for years and have had this happen to me (and I've done it myself as well, when there's been literal years between released new content for particular fandoms). I feel like it's just something that happens, tho: you follow someone for particular fandom content (or they follow you for the same reason), and sooner or later one of you drifts away from the shared fandom and gets into and starts posting some other fandom content. People's interests change over time, and if there's nothing new coming down the pike, people get bored/tired of the same old stuff all the time.

Are people not tagging properly? Blocking "Wang Ian" doesn't help?

I enjoy cdramas, but I totally understand about the gross gender stuff.

Ugh, I meant "Wangxian".

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Tagging properly? A lot of them aren't tagging anything.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's a shame.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-06 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
If they're your friends just ask them to tag it with the character's name. It's pretty a pretty simple request, and then you can blacklist the names and be done.

I don't spend a lot of time on tumblr, but so many authors I subbed on AO3 just post CDrama stuff now and man, is it a bummer.

(I know people change fandoms all the time, but those really prolific and good people...it's a loss when they move on to something I give zero shits about.)

+1

But it feels worse on this case because it feels like everyone (who has the same broad stylistic preferences in fandom that I do) is moving into this fandom, *and* it feels like it's the only fandom that people are moving into. It feels like the only game in town.

The gross gender stuff is kinda inherent in Chinese culture in general as far as I can tell.

Hell even the language is telling. The word for 'wife' is composed of two hanzi that mean 'wife' and 'child'. The word for husband is kinda 'ten foot' and 'man'. Like fuck off already.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-06 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That does seem to be the case, unfortunately. Though I'd say that comparatively speaking, The Untamed has less of it than other cdramas I've seen. I couldn't stomach Ashes of Love, Legend of the White Snake (the one on Netflix) and Eternal Love because of the gross gender stereotypes and general weirdness about female characters.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-06 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
when the reason why this because a show murks all of it's ladies bar one, i wouldn't consider that a point of praise to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Please note that I did say "comparatively speaking".

Yes it's inherent in most cultures in the world. We're discussing China where that is also the case. It's not racist to point out China's very real gender issues, just because other countries around the world also have gender issues.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate arguments like that. Gross gender stuff is "inherent" to 99% of cultures around the world and every now and then cultures get the fuck over it. You could just as easily say "you can't write 'woman' without 'man' which shows how female subjugation is inherent to English language cultures".

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
welcome to f!s where being racist to asians and their cultures is 100% a-okay because a handful of c-dramas have gotten some fandom attention and this offends ppl for some reason.

You're ridiculous. People don't need to post huge "BUT OF COURSE THIS APPLIES ALSO TO X, Y AND A-O" disclaimers if they criticize Ö.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. They could have mentioned any actual gender issues in China as an example but chose to go with… this.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
As we all know, only China has gross gender stuff, here in the west we're far too Cultured for that shit and there's no societal baggage or bullshit women have to wade through while growing up. We're just evolved beyond that.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-06 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly OP the best thing to do is ask them to tag the posts with something so you can blacklist them, it doesn't even have to be show specific something like 'c-drama' could work for all of them, that way you wouldn't need to block multiple tags.

If they're your friends a simple 'hey I'm getting bogged down by content I don't care for, can you tag it with x' should be fine, I've had fandom friends ask me to tag particular content before and I've always been happy to.

The other option is unfollowing if you aren't that close, since tumblr+twitter are all about curating the content you want to see. Someone isn't posting something you're into anymore? Then unfollow them for your own happiness.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I unfollow people when the majority of their blog consists of things I don't care about.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently you don't actually grocery hard to block things. See, how blocking tags on Tumblr works is: it blocks the posts even if your friends didn't tag a reblog. Because it blocks the tags of the original post as well, not just the tags your friends add. And since I doubt your friends are always the OPs of those masses of posts you see all the time and the actual OPs are very likely to tag their gifsets/pictures/fanart/whatever so, you know, people can find it...
Yeah, sounds a lot like you're just not trying very hard.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-07 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell, autocorrect.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-08 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I even LIKE The Untamed (or, more specifically, the novel it's based on) but the borderline yellow fever fangirling over the actors has really, REALLY soured me on the whole fandom, so uh

Big mood.
