142. Squee A Mighty Wind secret! And yes, OP I totally agree. Their relationship is brilliant, and brilliantly acted. God, I love that film.

151. Um...drugs aren't necessarily bad for you. It depends what you're taking and how often. But then I guess I'm a hippie liberal because I love a good spliff. And let's face it Seth Rogen is now a seriously successful Hollywood person, so dope hasn't exactly fucked his life up, now has it?

Amen to that.

So much great art and music over the years has been inspired by drugs... Anyone ever seen the Bill Maher act where he says he thinks Dark Side Of The Moon would have been worth ten dead kids? Funny shit.

Sounds hilarious. I'm going to have to look for it.

151 -- it hasn't fucked up his life, but being an actor is not exactly rocket science, either. Having lots of money does not always = being intelligent and hardworking.

I don't know. I worked in a counseling center with a group of kids who had all gotten in trouble (either with the police or with their schools) for using drugs, and were sent to treatment for it. So they weren't necessarily drug addicts -- just kids who used pot on a fairly regular basis. And I gotta tell ya, their decision making abilities, their judgment, their attention spans, their ability to retain information? All of that was roughly on the level of what you'd expect from a 12 year old. And most of them were failing or dropping out of high school, and lacked the motivation and skills to find jobs.

So I really can't buy into the whole "drugs aren't necessarily bad for you" claim. And even if someone's just an "occasional" user, they're still doing damage to their brains every time they use.

But I could equally point to the many adults that I know, some of whom have been smoking dope for thirty or more years, all of whom are Oxbridge graduates, as am I, who work very hard in demanding and sometimes prestigous jobs and have great home lives.

I got high last Friday, and sat around giggling with me were a university lecturer, a fairly senior police officer, a headmaster, an actor, and a charity worker - a counselling charity as it happens. We had a great night, but come Monday morning were back at our respecitve jobs, making decisions and performing well.

Dope does not harm your brain with every use, and in the long-term its effects are far less physically and emotionally destructive than the legal drug that is alcohol.

Okay then - Carl Sagan. Astronomer, astrophysicist, astrochemist, author, pioneer of astrobiology, author of six hundred scientific papers and twenty-odd books (at least nine of which were New York Times bestsellers), anti-nuclear activist, host of the most widely-watched science documentary ever made and author of the most widely-read science book, hero of scientific skepticism, inspirer to millions of future scientists (myself included)... habitual marijuana smoker.

So yeah (http://www.marijuana-uses.com/essays/002.html). Not a rocket scientist, but does astrophysicist count? XD

(Disclaimer: I've never used pot - mostly because I've never had the opportunity to come in to contact with it - but see absolutely no problem with it so long as, like all things, you're sensible about it.)

Don't you also think that's sort of a chicken or the egg type deal? It's more likely that kids like you've described as being on the mental level of a 12 year old would be the types more likely to turn to recreational drug use to get their kicks, due to lack of judgement, restraint, and increased risk-taking behaviours, as opposed to perfectly intelligent kids smoking some pot and then becoming what you've just described. That's generally been my experience in counselling centres and such. The kids tend to have other problems which cause them to be that way as well as more likely to use drugs. The drug use is a symptom, not a cause.
