151. People are killed every day because of it.

Think about policemen who are simply doing their job, who get shot by drug dealers. Or innocent bystanders who happen to be nearby a deal gone wrong. Or stoners who do stupid shit when they're high, and end up dead because of it.

Then there are the health issues. Whenever you inhale something shit stays in your lungs. It increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Short term memory loss and lowered learning abilities. Then of course there is the addiction.

So yeah, I think that people who choose to take these risks are stupid. I don't try and hide that fact. I also believe that other drugs are just as bad.

If marijuana was legal there'd be no drug dealers. Fewer people would be incarcerated, fewer police officers would be in danger (or employed), etc. It's the fact that it's illegal, not the fact that it exists and people use it, that causes those problems.

And I'd like to see some documentation of the stupid things people have supposedly done while high (combination of marijuana and other drugs don't count). Also, marijuana has been proven to not be chemically addictive (it's addictive the way fast food is addictive).

You are right about the tar in your lungs, but cigarettes, which are legal and aren't sold by drug dealers, also do that.

Thank you.

Well then, cigarettes and marijuana are bad.

True, but one's illegal and one isn't. I guess we know which plant the US government prefers!

Whenever someone talks about the stupid/dangerous things people do when they're high, I always think of the PSA in Harold & Kumar where the kid shoots himself with a rifle while smoking pot. Hilarious. Then I remember there were actual PSAs that, while not as absurd, told the same message, and that people like the OP believe in them wholeheartedly.

Whenever I've smoked all I've wanted to do is giggle, eat lots of cake and fall asleep.

There would be a whole bunch of new and potentially worse problems to deal with.

Documentation? Come to my former HS.

Addictive? Lmao of course it is. My friends who have done pot have said so themselves. They try to stop but can't.

Teenagers do stupid things regardless of any drug use.

Re: 151

[identity profile] peached.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
But had my former classmate not gotten high one night I doubt he would have been going 110 MPH on a 35 MPH road before crashing into an SUV driven by a mother with her two children in the back, killing two other passengers in the car and permanently crippling himself with severe brain damage.

Re: 151

[identity profile] ether-bunny.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
That kind of amazes me, because cops usually suspect people of stoned driving when they're creeping down a 45 mph street at 20 mph.

Re: 151

[identity profile] peached.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what happened. And I can't make you believe it, nor would I give out his name.

Re: 151

[identity profile] ether-bunny.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not asking for his name, lol. Was he your former classmate, or your former friend? Because if you don't know him well, you probably can't attest that he wasn't doing anything else that night. Almost always, pot doesn't speed people up.

And my brother was killed by a drunk driver. I don't go around supporting alcohol prohibition, and alcohol is responsible for far, far more accidents. Driving under the influence and vehicular homicide will still be crimes if marijuana is legalized.

Re: 151

Why legalize another mind-altering substance for someone to abuse?

Re: 151

(Anonymous) 2009-02-14 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ignoring the consequences of criminalization? Because people are abusing it already.

People with addictive personalities can get addicted to most anything.

I tell you what, I smoked pot almost every day for nearly a year, and then I moved away for college and I didn't anymore, because I didn't know where to buy it. And I didn't go through any kind of withdrawal at all.

So if it's addictive, it's on par with, say, chocolate. I miss a day of caffeine and I feel it. I didn't feel anything when I stopped smoking pot, at all, and just about all the research shows that it's not chemically addictive. So if your friends are addicted, it's on a personal, emotional level - which means that it could have been any number of things they got addicted to. Not weed's fault.

Re: 151

[identity profile] peached.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I could care less how much pot you smoked or did not smoke. I've done my homework and formed my opinion, and I'm not going to continue to argue my point.

Addicts can't be reasoned with.

Re: 151

[identity profile] ether-bunny.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, you don't come across as having done any 'homework' at all, since the things you're saying are pretty much disproved.

Re: 151

[identity profile] peached.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Disproved? I don't think so. To me it's people trying to justify their usage of illegal drugs.

Re: 151

Psychological addiction /= physical addiction. Pot is not physically addictive. It falls in the same category as fast food, or the internet, or gambling, etc.

Moreover, I'm not entirely sure how it could get worse. When you prohibit some substance people like, a black market is created and soon becomes controlled by criminal syndicates. See, prohibition, the War on Drugs. This fuels more serious criminal activity than drug trafficing, as rival gangs compete for business. America imprisons a greater percentage of its population than any other country, disproportionately from historically unprivileged groups.

Legalizing, regulating and taxing marijuana (hint: it would still be illegal for people under 18/21) would not only be a start to ending the War on Drugs, which has had massive negative consequences, but would be an excellent source of revenue for the government (which needs money at the moment).

There is tons of literature on the War on Drugs and marijuana specifically, and the majority of it, from authors liberal, conservative and elsewhere, from policy wonks and medical researchers, is in favor of legalizing pot. Try reading up on it.

For example, the mafia exploding into the limelight during prohibition. Come on, y'all, let's not forget Al Capone.

Re: 151

[identity profile] peached.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
When did I say they were psychologically addicted? To my knowledge you don't know them personally, anon.

And I've heard all those arguments before and still my opinion remains the same: unless it's used for much-needed medical purposes, then no.

There is also tons of literature against it. I've read up on both.

Re: 151

(Anonymous) 2009-02-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Your original post came across as more "I knew some douchebag stoners in HS", not "I've researched the issue and here is what and why I believe as I do". Because we've all known douchebag stoners in HS, and strangely enough the ones I knew straightened out their lives and are, on average, doing better than most of the other people in HS who I keep up with (especially the alcoholics, who are doing worse).

Re: 151

(Anonymous) 2009-02-14 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Why are much-needed medical purposes okay?

Re: 151

(Anonymous) 2009-02-14 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you honestly asking why something being used for legitimate medical purposes is better than using it for irresponsible recreation?
