Not the secret OP, but I wanted to comment. It's not that a film has drugs in it. It's movies with premisses that seem based on drugs. I do think less of people who drink, and while I would watch a movie with drinking in it (most any movie ever), I wouldn't watch one _based on_ drinking (Beerfest, for example).

Strangely enough, I wouldn't see a movie based on drinking, but I would see one with marijuana as a core point in the plot. I'm not sure why that is... I find stoned people funnier than drunk people puking, I guess. But I don't think a movie can really be based around -just- potsmoking, or it would be two hours of guys sitting on a couch eating pizza and drinking grape soda. As far as Pineapple Express goes, the characters are stoners and the beginning portions of the movie focus on marijuana use, but when it gets more into the plot... I mean, there's a lot going on and it really doesn't have anything to do with weed. It's just more amusing to watch bumbling characters in intense/dangerous situations, it's that way in a lot of movies, whether they're bumbling because of substance use or not.

Yes, this exactly. I have seen movies where people smoke and drink, and does it bother me? Yes, because I don't like being around people who do either, and it clouds my like for the character on screen a lot, but I don't walk out or anything. It's when the movie is solely based on these vices.

Stoner movies are more about the wacky hijinks of said stoners than actually having them light up and sit on the couch for an afternoon with a couple bags of chips. Likewise, movies about drinking are less about falling down and puking and more about holidays in the English countryside with your out-of-work best friend and surly locals.

I realize that. But why would I want to watch a movie where the characters I'm supposed to identify with go around doing things I find morally reprehensible?

And if the films can do without the pot/drinking, why don't they? You don't need pot/alcohol to act dumb and have wacky hijinks.
