(Anonymous) 2021-07-11 07:56 am (UTC)(link)Stories do a lot of things for us, but one key thing is that they allow us to practice emotions. We feel joy at character's triumph, we fall in love with heroes (or villains) we connect to, we grieve for characters who die and we feel frustration when they fail because a mistake was made or external circumstances conspired against us. When we feel those things in real life, it gives us a blueprint on how to engage with that emotion, even if we don't realise it.
But at the moment, people are "full". They are emotionally exhausted. New is not exciting but scary, the risk of a character dying unexpectedly or a situation getting tenser than you can handle is stressful, committing to characters you don't know is just plain too much to ask when real life people have proven to have the capacity to be so freaking shitty.
Maybe this is happening to you. It's definitely happening to me.
So Dr. Anon prescribes a sunny spot (wear your sunscreen!), a comfy chair, a drink next to you and a snack, and a book by whoever you love to read. Because the other thing books do is give us a safe, familiar harbour in trying times - your old friends are there, so let them be kind to you.
Or, if you really, really want to read new things, tell me who you love to read and what you hate to pick up, and I'll try my hand giving you some recs and tips on how to push yourself past this :)
