I think there are some circumstances for which this is easier than others, i.e when the conflict requires some outside party or circumstances to resolve, but I agree in I've noticed so many people think that winning implies the winner did the right things and the loser did the wrong things and that's just not necessary. Sometimes the winner did stupid shit, and the loser did the right things, and the probability wasn't with them.

I don’t think the show was the problem as much as her then launching a massive product range that was pretty much exclusively the same stuff she says you should downsize.

I liked her first book and it really helped me organize my things, but I didn't like the rest that followed. They were all kinda boring. Her show's fun, but I think people were hating on her long before the show.

The product line is weird, but chix gotta get paid.

Anyway, bless her for the t-shirt folding method. Changed my dressers for the better.

Maybe your problem is that you're looking for comfort reads and not just stories.

Not everything you like or enjoy needs to be preceded by the word 'comfort'.

You can like a tv show without it being a 'comfort series', you can like a character without them needing to be a 'comfort character'. Same for a movie, game, book, etc.

Maybe if you looked for a book to enjoy as a piece of brief entertainment, to last as long as the pages do, instead of deliberately looking for a new obsession, you'd find one of the latter by accident.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-10 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Often, it is familiarity that makes something a comfort. You know the characters, the plots, the tropes, the stories are old friends and you need little mental bandwidth to read them. In comparison, an entirely new piece of media is exhausting purely by virtue of being new, no matter how good.

It's the same reason the first time you visit a new place, the way feels longer going there than coming back, when you have already seen it once.

It's the same reason we all find it easier to read fanfic than to read new books, because we already know the characters and the tropes, which makes them so much easier to digest after a long day, or during a time of extreme stress (such as a pandemic) than a story full of strangers with a plot of which we don#t know where it'll lead.

Honestly, keep your faves for when you actually need comfort and make an effort to find unfamiliar subjects, in short story or novella form. Reading novels requires a willingness to get past a certain amount of introductory information, and if you're used to not doing that because you're only reading comfort stuff, it can make that process MORE boring. Short stories and novellas can make that intro process a little more compelling.

You might find that emotionally or psychologically you're not ready for new things. That's okay too.

I have a couple of suggestions.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-10 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If you haven't already, maybe look for recommendations for stuff like the authors you are reading now (If you like Penname O. Writer, then you might like Alias D. Author). So you can maybe find the aspects that you like, but still be branching out a bit.

Look for writers that your faves like - this way there will be a connection with a fave in your mind going in and that may help.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-10 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you. We've kind of just gone through an entire year+ of a global pandemic that isn't over yet and at some point books that are comfortable and won't hurt you Like That are a very good thing. I've been letting other people read library books first that I know I want to read, but waiting for a day when I have the emotional energy to confront the possibility that this book might not comfort me the way I want and need right now.

Are other formats a thing that would work for you? Like, if you're reading paper books, would electronic books help you be able to pick it up again? Short stories, to get you used to new authors in a few pages? Paper books, so no notifications barge in? Audio books, so you have your hands covered in dishwater at the point you usually get bored and it would be more work to get prepared to turn it off?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-10 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'mma take a slightly different tack and not worry about the "comfort" bit. But OP, this happens to a LOT of bookworms. I used to think it was because I got into fandom and read a lot of manga and fic, but many years and many shared anecdotes later, and I realize this actually happens a lot. A lot of people who used to read excessively, whether it was only in childhood/high school or up through later in life, eventually hit a point where you just can't find anything good anymore. and it doesn't seem limited to a current year, trend among genre books, etc - I will take recs for books of any age by any author so long as it hits my buttons and yet every rec has failed. I just can't get into books anymore whether they're 20 years old or published this year.

So, you're not alone. You're part of a wave of disenchanted bookworms. I wish I had a solution or advice but all I can say is, know you're not the first nor the last and there's lots of others you can hang around and chat with about how many books you returned to the library/sold back after four chapters.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
(Cozy Werewolf Anon) :I am being self depreciating here FYI.:

As one of the anons above me has said about disenchanted bookworms, as a disenchanted bookworm, I ended up writing my own books to tell stories I found comfy, cozy, and amusing in my head.

I honestly don't recommend this (unless you love writing.) Since I now have like 9 different ideas vying for brain space/time. Whether or not people want found family werewolf biker stories or warrior princesses is not really my problem? (Not that they can find them, thanks Amazon.) And I very rarely pick up a book anymore. Too busy writing (original and/or fanfic.) When the pandemic started I'd been trying to read more indies, and that was not the way to go about it either. >_< Indies are really hard to find well written. Once we're out of the pandemic I might try again.

It's okay to have 4 or 5 authors you love. You don't have to branch out. We're in a pandemic. Give yourself some grace. Everyone is stressed. Having comfort stuff is fine! Like, I wish I could say "go to royal road or wattpad and sort by tags you want and you'll find good stuff!" And, I can't. So, I guess this is hugs and cocoa and sympathy.
