Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2021-07-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
(If you're wondering why I seem to be posting more often, it's because there have been fewer submissions lately, and therefore fewer secrets. I generally post this here when my stock of comment secrets is getting a bit low.)

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and I'll try my best to use an appropriate image choice. Er, just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

Yours truly,

a secret maker

I love costume dramas but I am so done with all the usual eras. I desperately want some ancient world costume dramas. Not just Greek or Roman (though would love more of these too), but everything from Ur onwards. As accurately as is feasibly possible and with no intervention of modern politics.

I was with you up until your last seven words, especially because the choice to avoid modern politics is itself political, especially as shorthand for "diversity is bad and ruins media for me."

YES. I'd love some Ancient Egyptian, but really, anything ancient would be fun.

you know, it's about time they started mining the Epic of Gilgamesh for story ideas. I'd be down.

I have a whole list of things on my computer that I've never seen but want to watch. But every time I plan on one of those as the next thing to watch, I'll end up getting the urge to rewatch something I love. I think I've watched 3 new tv shows in the past two years and just one movie. I still haven't seen most of the movies I want to see like Raya. But I still just started a rewatch of a loved favorite.

I'm honestly not sure if I want to change this habit of mine or not. My faves are faves for a reason and make me happy.

As a kid I was rarely scared by media. Real life things, sure. But there was only one book that ever scared me, and I did read a lot of horror. Bruce Coville's Book of Nightmares. I recently picked up a copy at a used bookstore and reread it. And even though I'm an adult reading a book for kids where I already know all the stories, it still scared me almost as much as it did kid!me.

(note to secret maker: fandom is FFX)

Lulu is cool, but that is probably the grossest looking design I've seen for a dress. Especially considering her home is a tropical island.

I started watching videos about skateboarding as research for a fic so I could describe the tricks and now I'm obsessed with those videos. I have zero interest in actually learning how to skateboard, but man are those videos fun and always bring a smile to my face.

(If you need an image, secret maker nonny, my favorite channel is Braille Skateboarding.)

I used to love reading but no longer really do it because nothing is new any more. At a certain point you've read, watched, or played through so many stories that you can predict every plot before it happens... and even if you didn't see a certain twist coming, you know where it's going and what tropes will come up next as soon as events happen.

Every story is just someone else's version of one that you've seen before. Same goes for movies, TV, video games, all of it. And that gets pretty boring.

I think Doctor Who is a soul deadening experience ever since they introduced transsexual timelords.

I'm not really in fandoms so much as I lurk around the corners and post fic on occasion, but I do sometimes catch bits of wank/arguments going on.

The current one in my small fandom is, once again, people arguing about who should top/bottom in one of my ships. The part that gets me about this one: the Y>X configuration for this ship, which is the least popular, is getting fans of X>Y steamed because there's been a bit of an uptick of Y>X due to some new writers, Y>X also happens to be the one I like the best. As a result this has galvanized me to dust off my porn-muscles and add some bottom-X smut to the tag just to spite the assholes trying to quash an already unpopular sex dynamic for this ship.

Not to toot my own horn but I know I write smut well, or at least to the extent that most fandoms I write for like it very much. I hope the wanky assholes will be bitterly angry at all the fic I'm going to add that isn't to their liking.

B!S: I don't actually care what others prefer porn-wise, you do you, I just care when people are assholes about it.

[Harry Potter secret]

Look, I get that "magic is cool" and all. And I can get daydreaming about being a wizard. But in HP fandom I see a disturbing amount of pureblood supremacy apologism and victim blaming the muggleborns and everyone else the Death Eaters hate, or just trying to romanticize being a pureblood Death Eater. Like fiction=/= reality and I staunchly believe that. But I wish I knew why seeing anti-muggle comments and complaints of "muggle wank" sometimes aimed at fics that dare to suggest that a wizard can still be into muggle things just irritates me. To the point where the word "muggle wank" makes me almost want to punch a wall.

I feel like a hypocrite. I argue that writing dark fics doesn't mean you approve of the behaviors. But I feel uneasy about romanticizing the whole rich pureblood thing. And maybe I'm just tired of people who think because they would throw themselves completely into the wizarding world that /anyone/ would.

My spouse and I send each other memes and fun things through fb messenger. Usually I get pictures of sloths or gifs of bunny rabbits in baskets but sometimes they send memes about my fandoms.

SECRET: These are Facebook fandom memes which are 90% old and 10% completely wrong. I'll never tell because I think it's the sweetest, kindest thing and I genuinely love them when I'm given them.

I feel myself losing interest in my OTPs and Favorite Fandoms. I dont have anything lined up to take their place. I'm a little bit scared I'll just sit around being depressed and wishing I wanted to read something.

You know how people are looking for their slash and femslash hints in straight media? Well, I look for the opposite in my slashy media. Either my slash ship isn't the canon one or I prefer them as close friends/found family.

I have nothing against gay relationship canons.

It has been so long since the end of the last season of Stranger Things that I almost don't want there to be another season now. It seems like too much time has passed and too much of the world has changed for it to ever mesh with the previous seasons the way it should.

Magic Kingdom for Sale -- Sold! was literally my introduction to modern fantasy and it still took me an additional 20 years to make it past the first chapter of The Sword of Shannara because I just couldn't get past the fact that I was supposed to take a character named Alanon seriously.

Bonus Secret: I still think the Landover books are better.

I haven't seen/experienced the media for nearly half (or more) of the fic I read.

I just look up pictures, if there's audio, I'll listen to a clip just to get the sound of the characters, and if I'm feeling particularly lost or curious, I'll wiki some background info.

I haven't seen a single episode of the Marvel TV or streaming shows, and I'm not a big Loki fan, but I still love the army of AU Lokis because it'll lead to so many fun group cosplays.

I wish that someone would write the Batman story with an end. I would enjoy the comics more if I knew that there was a canonical end, and there would be no more increasingly gritty reboots or bizarre plotlines in an attempt to keep interest going.

I was excited to hear that the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whelan Turner is getting a live action adaptation, but I hope they follow the books' lead and never mention how old the characters are. And I hope they cast adult actors.

They can be young adults, but I can imagine the discourse if Eugenides and Sophos start the series as teens and marry women who were out of their teens when the series started.

(My best guess at ages is something like 15 for Sophos and 17-18 for Eugenides circa The Thief, and 19-23 for Eddis and Attolia, idk if I'm wildly off.)

I have a tendency to replay old JRPGs and then stop just short of the final boss. Not sure why... I guess it's anticipating the end of the adventure, and maybe that makes me sad in a little way.

Xenosaga Episode 3 is one of the few games I'll just charge ahead with. Maybe because its conclusion/continuation is left up in the air.

I very much enjoy watching K-dramas, most of them aren't High Art or anything they're just good fun, but it never fails to make me pause whenever I'm watching one and you can very clearly see that the women's faces are about 3-4 shades lighter than their necks+bodies.

This doesn't happen in every K-drama, but often enough that it is noticeable, and once I see it I can't unsee it and it'll stick out like a sore thumb the entire time I'm watching.
