Having read the full quote, the interviewer might have been baiting him a bit to get a reaction, but Mackie is a big boy and made the choice to spew homophobic bullshit all on his own.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
So, which part specifically did you think was homophobic?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah there was a much kinder, more diplomatic way to deal with what the interviewer was maneuvering him into.
He made the choice he did all on his own.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
He describes homosexuality as "pure and beautiful".

He spends a *lot* of words describing how much he values friendship, and that he wanted to portray a "sensitive, masculine figure".

I mean, believing that someone can be kind and loyal, and sensitive, and all that cool relationship stuff, without the preriquisite of wanting to touch someone's naughty bits... doesn't really smack of a phobia to me.

Maybe tune down the sensitivity on your Offense Meter just a touch?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, NAYRT but all of those things can also easily be read as a tone of, "But they were just roommaaaaaates." so I can see why some people get bristly about it.

There's always people who are so quick to brush off, "They can't be dating they're just friends." A LOT of the time and it can get irritating.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely see your point.

But, conversely, if someone said I was only nice to a girl (or a boy) because I wanted to get inside their pants, I'd be pretty bristly too.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Eh but nobody was implying that about HIM at all so it's not like it's truly equivalent.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
So? He's putting a lot of work embodying Sam. The nuance, the body-language, the micro-expressions. Who wouldn't feel attached? It's not like the guy hasn't played gay characters before.

Who enjoys seeing their acting choices persistently misread?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, you can ignore the person saying that and ship whoever you want or you can let them ruin your fun, but either way, it's not homophobic to not ship Sam and Bucky.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but for me, a large amount of the exhausted eye-rolling I was doing was that he definitely fell back on that old "why can't two men just have a very close friendship?" thing, which... literally, that is all that exists. 99.9% of all m/m ships in the world are based on characters who, in canon, are two men who "just have a very close friendship." There is absolutely no shortage of stories about male friendship and platonic male bonding. So to act like the existence of shipping, or "worse," the existence of a fandom that truly wants/believes their ship to be canon is somehow taking away from that... nah, man. That doesn't sit right with me. That feels like the usual mocking, just with a gentle, condescending pat on the head.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It feels like, would you be this sensitive if somebody posited that maybe Sam and Natasha's friendship had a romantic element? We'll never know but I reckon not.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Turn that around for a second. Would shippers be accusing the man of bigotry if he said that actually he sees Sam and Natasha as really close, platonic friends? We’ll never know, but I reckon not.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol ridiculous

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Apples to oranges but ok.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and with that 99 percent of male friendships, there are always people in fandom who think they should be a couple because they really can't see any guys as just friends unless those guys are aggressively heterosexual to the point of not being able to pat each other's shoulder without turning to the camera and saying "no homo tho." I am beyond weary of the contradictory illusion in which both toxic masculinity and nontoxic male-male friendships apparently abound in our media.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
But like... fandom doesn't matter here. Fandom makes everyone bang. That goes across the whole board, including het and f/f ships. So that has nothing to do with anything.

What I'm specifically calling out is this insinuation that "everything is gay" when in reality almost nothing is gay. Not really. Again, fanworks don't matter here-- because fanworks aren't the real thing. Fanworks will always be non-canon. Fanworks will always be wishful thinking. The actual canon is overwhelming guys being just friends. So for an actor to complain about this phenomenon that doesn't exist is boggling at best, disappointing at worst.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This would work as an argument like 20 years ago, but not now. Fandom is in the mainstream alongside everything else, shippers are known about, people don't hide it anymore. Like I already saw people doing the 'they're QB'ing!!' at this show from the trailers, never mind the mess that always ends up exploding when some pet fanon m/m doesn't end up happening like the fans want, even though it was never going to.

This isn't some niche thing kept in the shadows anymore where we keep to ourselves, so I imagine that from the outside it really does seem like there's a large group of people who don't understand that male friendships exist. What with the way QB accusations are thrown around if two men so much as look at one another or have any kind of positive interaction. And yeah, that's not on fandom, but for people who aren't into it and don't get it, how are they meant to understand that? Especially that for all the chill shippers just enjoying stuff there are so many very loud ones demanding canon for every m+m interaction under the sun.

Yeah this. When there's a larger percentage of non-straight romances in main stream media I'll give this argument more credit. Until then, the people saying men can't hold hands and the people who want men to hold hands are two mostly different groups.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who's a whore for accurate characterization, I kind of do see his point... but I admit it came across as verbal diarrhea. I wonder at whom the comments were directed. The shippers? Do they flood his twitter and inbox and approach him at cons with "OMG PLZ MAKE SAM AND BUCKY KISS!!!111 LULZ" Does he have to hear about gay ships all day long? Does he think fans' wishes will have power over the story direction? Is it that Marvel is so big, and he just doesn't want a relationship misrepresented? Is he concerned about something deeper (no pun intended)? So much to unpack. It's just a strange response.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. It felt to me like "You did not have to get so deep, man." LOL Marvel movies have almost zero canon LGBT characters so it's not likely to develop between Sam & Bucky.

this isn't even the first time mackie's said shit that was at best questionable and i honestly wonder why people are willing to do mental gymnastics to excuse the gross things he's said.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And what other questionable shit has he said?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)

NA - Oh. That's...not great.

I'm white, so I'll leave his whole "Don't get dreadlocks or you're making yourself a target for racial profiling and police brutality" argument to other PoCs to judge him for. I very much disagree with his perspective, but it's also not my business to judge a black man for the toxic ideas he's internalized in order to feel like he has control in a society that's out to get him. (If other people of color judge him, though, I'll be hearing them out like yup, un-huh, I feel you.)

But the gender roles stuff is yikes enough that I will be side-eyeing him from here on out. He needs to majorly rethink some shit. He's now mentally filed in the same group as Martin Freeman: Insensitive pricks who fancy themselves clever comedians but are actually neither particularly clever nor funny.

ONTD and gossip mag sites as "sources." Mental gymnastics go both ways, you realize.
