Sometimes the press can be great... other times, you wonder what crawled up their ass that morning.

I do wish people would stop asking actors about ships, especially fanon ones that we all know will never happen, because it rarely works out and ends up awkward as hell. But I also don't think actors have to like these ships either? They are allowed to be annoyed about being asked about something that isn't an intentional part of their character, especially if they get asked about it a lot.

Idk, I just want that fourth wall back personally. I don't need actor approval to like my ships.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I mean, it's cool if they volunteer support of a ship but it's really not necessary.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Yeah, I absolutely LOVE when the creator/actors are voluntarily supportive (I was never in the Hannibal fandom but it always made me really happy to see the genuine fondness and support the fandom got from the creator and actors). But if they don't voluntarily talk about it, I wish everyone would just leave them alone about it. Let them pretend it doesn't even exist if they want to.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I also don't care how actors feel about ships. Creators of shows, sure, but not actors. I do have mixed feelings about the fourth wall coming down. I feel like if creators see fan support for pairings and it enables them to naturalistically put the characters together, that's kind of cool, but most of the time it seems to lead to either shallow pandering and no real ship development or the creators disavowing it as strenuously as possible.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly can't even think of a ship that was put together this way, which is why I find the fan campaigning or demands to 'make x canon' to be absurd. If it's not in the text it won't suddenly appear just because we like it, that's not how that works, and shouldn't be imo. Let the creators have their vision and we can play with it in our own space.

I think the pandemic is partly to blame for how incredibly affected people were by what he said.

We've had what, 18 months of no usual film junkets and interviews?

18 months of not witnessing Graham Norton showing fanart to celebrity guests has lulled people into a false sense of security imo.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Lol this is a good point. We've gone soft to this sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Having read the full quote, the interviewer might have been baiting him a bit to get a reaction, but Mackie is a big boy and made the choice to spew homophobic bullshit all on his own.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
So, which part specifically did you think was homophobic?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah there was a much kinder, more diplomatic way to deal with what the interviewer was maneuvering him into.
He made the choice he did all on his own.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
He describes homosexuality as "pure and beautiful".

He spends a *lot* of words describing how much he values friendship, and that he wanted to portray a "sensitive, masculine figure".

I mean, believing that someone can be kind and loyal, and sensitive, and all that cool relationship stuff, without the preriquisite of wanting to touch someone's naughty bits... doesn't really smack of a phobia to me.

Maybe tune down the sensitivity on your Offense Meter just a touch?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, NAYRT but all of those things can also easily be read as a tone of, "But they were just roommaaaaaates." so I can see why some people get bristly about it.

There's always people who are so quick to brush off, "They can't be dating they're just friends." A LOT of the time and it can get irritating.

NAYRT, but for me, a large amount of the exhausted eye-rolling I was doing was that he definitely fell back on that old "why can't two men just have a very close friendship?" thing, which... literally, that is all that exists. 99.9% of all m/m ships in the world are based on characters who, in canon, are two men who "just have a very close friendship." There is absolutely no shortage of stories about male friendship and platonic male bonding. So to act like the existence of shipping, or "worse," the existence of a fandom that truly wants/believes their ship to be canon is somehow taking away from that... nah, man. That doesn't sit right with me. That feels like the usual mocking, just with a gentle, condescending pat on the head.

this isn't even the first time mackie's said shit that was at best questionable and i honestly wonder why people are willing to do mental gymnastics to excuse the gross things he's said.

I just have to sideye all the comments i saw from people who were saying that they're planning on boycotting any film he's in.

You know damn well they'll probably look the other way when he's involved in ensemble movies. 'I'm not watching this for Mackie I'm watching to support Sebastian Stan' type reasoning.

They're all multimillionaires and you want your next fix of fandom serotonin, stop fooling yourselves.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I just remember the droves of #notmycaptain and 'Steve would never' comments people were making over this.
Those people need to get an actual grip.

Captain America isn't real. Sam Willson and Steve Rodgers aren't real.

If an actor doesn't see his character as a gay man then that's not homophobic, that's just how he, the writers and the directors are interpreting the character.

Don't get upset just because once again you've been seen and you feel uncomfortable about your fandom activities having a spotlight thrown on it.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Steve *Rodgers* is certainly not real.

2021 was supposed to be the year of not feeling embarrassed about our hobbies and the minute Sam/Bucky had a light shone on it people went on the attack and for what?

Nothing was gained except to call a man a homophobe for being honest enough to speak what was on his mind instead of vying for attention from a section of fandom that he's clearly not comfortable with.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I thought his comments made it clear he's uncomfortable with his character being perceived as gay. The crap about gay relationships being so beautiful and pure blah blah, sounded like when you say "I like X" before dragging them. I don't feel like the interviewer was particularly leading. The question (which I don't care for anyway) is pretty standard nowadays. The subsequent fumble is also par for the course.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
Shippers just use absolutely any excuse to scream that they're being oppressed and I'm over it.

They're never going to canonically fuck in the MCU. And even if they were owned by a more woke company, if Mackie doesn't want to depict Sam as a gay man then thats his decision.

He's been playing this character for years. I'm pretty sure that he knows him better than you.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ignoring interviews is the correct choice for you and for anyone else who’s going to take it as a personal attack when an actor doesn’t enthusiastically support their headcanon.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here, I don't take the actors words as an attack. I take all of the insulting comments on reddit and the very aggressive and clickbaity headlines on third string media outlets as unpleasant. But like, if you dislike the idea of people caring about fandom what the fuck are you doing on fandom secrets?

Every incident of this kind of thing is completely negated for me by the fact that Disney would never allow it in the first place. The only gay content you're ever going to see in mainstream American TV and films is throwaway lines and characters that can be airbrushed out by China.
