There was a secret a while ago about someone being mad that (in their perception) artists were drawing characters from some big popular wuxia show "as Black" and I looked at the art they included as an example and.

no, kiddo, just because YOU see that skin tone as Black doesn't mean it's a Black headcanon, wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I AM A WHITE PERSON BUT I GREW UP AROUND A NUMBER OF IMMIGRANTS FROM CHINA AND THAT IS WITHIN THE NORMAL RANGE OF SKIN TONES FOR THAT AREA AND THERE IS A COLORISM PROBLEM ALL THE FUCK OVER CHINA, JESUS CHRIST

Literally the only thing that I could identify as maybe-Black about that portrayal was the skin tone. Yes, I have known Black people with that skin tone; that skin tone might or might not be lighter than a brown paper bag. But why jump directly to "this is totally a Black headcanon" and get mad about it when ... .... ??????????????????????????

Alright now I want to see that secret in particular, if someone has a link.

When I was teaching in Korea, my coteacher told one of the kids that he shouldn't play so much soccer outside because he was too dark and he was too handsome for that. She was joking but still. Yeah, definitely, some Koreans at least tan very darkly.

I think I would be surprised if an actual wuxia show main character had dark skin, because of, wow, colorism! So though I don't know the show in question, I believe the artist probably did draw the character darker than they are in the show. But you're right, that doesn't make it a black headcanon, there are people all over the place in all the East Asian countries with much darker skin than you tend to see portrayed in their media.

I've seen a wuxia where it was a (minor) plot point that a couple of characters had darkly tanned skin. They were good people! Explicitly, v. good people. But their dark tan was also spoken of as unattractive, too.

Only thing that bothers me is how so many people think the colorism is based in anti-black racism when the main factor is actually classism.

Yep. That's because even woke Americans still can't see past the end of their noses.

I don't remember which fanart they used but just because YOU think the artist didn't intend it as a black headcanon doesn't have to mean they didn't. A lot of fanartists who draw characters much darker than canonically described make a big fuss about it and often explicitly state their intentions. And if this was about the MDZS character/clan with the uncontrollably violent streak being singled out as the designated dark one in fanart ... Yeah, that's still an issue.
