TJLC in a nutshell. Nothing new, though. wishful thinking is a strong drug, as is the idea that canonical=legitimacy.

Mm, as insane as TJLC got, as someone who was in the fandom at the time, they weren't coming up with things out of thin air-- you have to understand exactly how much the showrunners and other production staff goaded people on with it. Sherlock may be one of the few rare cases where the queerbait argument has some validity. There were things dangled in front of shippers for them to latch onto and give them hope. It was enough to keep people watching through the absolute garbage of S4, which is all they really cared about. The numbers.
