Modern day concerns and politics can absolutely have parallels to the issues of ancient historical settings, and it could be interesting to explore. So I disagree there that it can't be done.

But I completely agree with everything else, because just because it could be done doesn't mean it has to be done. There's nothing wrong with just wanting to see the ancient political intrigue be completely divorced from modern politics. And I already know that's all OP wants, and they've been incredibly reasonable and well-spoken about it. So AYRT is definitely just being a hasty ass in assuming the absolute worst faith reading of this secret.
