You rolled with a series where the wizard is named Questor Thews, but you balked at the one where he’s named Allanon?

No offense to Questor, mind, he was one of my favourites in Landover. Him, Abernathy and Strabo. I did prefer Shannara, though. Could be just a subgenre thing, in my case. The portal fantasy elements in Landover made it just that bit less appealing to me. I do like portal fantasy, but the more adult tone Landover gave it meshed oddly, and I wasn’t fond of the overall effect.

Honestly, my favourite from Brooks was the Word and the Void. I came to it later than the other two, because it’s much darker and smaller, and it stuck with me more.

(Could wish he hadn’t merged it into Shannara in the end, mind you. I liked it better stand-alone)

Look, it's just hard to take a wizard seriously when his name sounds exactly like a support group for family members of alcoholics. Questor Thews is peak ridiculous fantasy naming, but it doesn't have that record-scratch quality.

DA - Also, in the context of the story, Questor Thews being a ridiculous fantasy name is kind of the point. Ben's been thrown into what seems like a ridiculous fantasy scenario, and a decent chunk of his plotline in the first book is him realizing that the stakes are higher than the silly names and talking dog would indicate at first.

Shannara is supposed to be High Fantasy, and the names that aren't literally ripped off from Tolkien (there is a character named Durin, ffs) are things like Allanon and Flick. It's a little distracting.
