my snarky response is a city with enterprising thieves, or...a city.

in general varying your route to work means that it's harder for anyone watching you or fixating on you, for whatever reason, to predict your location except at more secure points. it wasn't that much personal inconvenience for me that as a method of personal safety to reduce risk it's worth it.
