<3 Yeah, my family knows the general idea of some of the stuff I'm into, but like... they know I like Final Fantasy in general and so they'll get me something they saw with some random FF character on it. And mostly it's not a character I'm into, but it's sweet that they tried and it's not like I hate a lot of characters in the franchise, hahah.

LOL can relate! When I was first getting to know my partner he sent me Reddit memes to start conversations or about things we talked about before and I used to think it was pretty cringe, but carried on talking to him cause he was sweet and nice. Years later we're considering marriage and he still sends me memes, but he's so on point with them I genuinely enjoy them and I've gotten used to finding things to send back to him specifically. Love is very weird, your spouse sounds like a sweetheart and I hope you guys can keep sending them back and forth!

A friend of mine sometimes posts memes she found on facebook in the group chat, and one time I replied with I came out to have a good time and I am honestly feeling so attacked right now, which... she did not know, so she reacted rather defensively at my perceived negative reaction and I had to awkwardly explain. Now, when I use a meme that could be in any way misunderstood, I make sure to mention that it's a meme (and that they might not get it, but I'm hilarious, obviously).

I recently started shipping something new and saw a similar debate. It's not the biggest discussion surrounding the pairing or the characters, but still... I thought we'd left those arguments behind years ago.

It'd be one thing if people just stated preferences for what they liked to read, but no, 'A is obviously the bottom, because of reasons x, y, and z'. And if you believe otherwise you're not a 'true' shipper or a newbie who doesn't get it or some other nonsense.

Seriously, what? Maybe it's this one fandom, but lately a lot of convos have me flashing back to the early 2000s.

Finally, OP: yes, fantastic, keep doing what you're doing, be the change, etc.

I like you, OP. Also, I still can’t believing fighting over who tops/bottoms is still a thing. Preferences are fine, but man, some people get so pissed off when someone dares to write Y/X instead if X/Y.

I think it's such a bizarre conflict to have. If I'm reading explicit fic, sometimes I want to read one partner on bottom or top more, but why would I get mad at people who ship what I ship? So weird. Oh, but sometimes I DO avoid a dynamic if the fic are more prone to dopey "seme/uke" type vibes.

I've introduced at least a dozen people to the idea of podcasts (family and coworkers). Inevitably they all go thru a True Crime phase that I have to drag them out (and yell at them not to listen to Sword and Scale lol). They always become more paranoid and anxious. Consuming that much true crime at once really is bad for you.
