What's happening, FS?

One of my bunnies (the one unambiguously sweet one) suddenly suffered some kind of fit and keeps listing to the left. I've calmed him down somewhat and given him treats and he's alert and WANTS to explore since I put him up on my bed but he can hardly walk without falling over.

I love him so much, but he's at least 8 (not sure how old because he was rescued as an adult) so this doesn't look good. And of course it happened when the vet was closed AND my own health issues were going even more haywire than they had been for the last week. I can barely get out of bed myself but I keep trying so I can bring him fresh mint and basil and water in a "dish" shallow enough that he can drink out of it...

Thank you... at least he seems fairly comfortable now and has had lots of his fave treats that I usually have to limit.

Aw crud, I'm sorry. Pet emergencies suck even when you can get them to the vet asap, nevermind when you can't. I hope you and your little guy both feel better soon.

Thanks... and yes they do. I've been through this kind of situation a lot but never this particular health emergency - I think he may have had a stroke or at least a seizure.

Somewhat amusing, he still keeps going after my phone's charging cable. It's sort of reassuring - buns gonna bun.

Is his head still listing to the left? One of my bunnies had it and was diagnosed with vestibular disease. She lived three more years before she died at 8 of something completely different, so it's not that bad.

However, the vet told me that the condition was extremely stressful for bunnies and I had to give her Xanax for three days. I also had to give her Panacur for several days. I think it took about a week before her condition improved. I also remember that I had to put her in a tiny enclosure because the vet was afraid she would fall if left free.

I don't know if that's what your boy has, but if you google the disease and think it fits, you might want to try Panacur before you are able to see a vet. I'm pretty sure you have it / can find it easily (most non specialised vets have it).

I wish you and your poor bunny the best!

SA

Maybe I should specify that I'm European, in case the meds have different names in the US.

And I'm sorry if I came across as too forceful or too emotionally involved. It's just that I've been where you are when your bun is sick and the vet's not available and I just wanted to help.

No worries, I know what you mean - I'm part of a FB rabbit group and it is unfortunately a situation that comes up a lot and everyone wants to help.

I'm thinking Panacur is something we can only get by prescription here though... tomorrow I will hopefully find out what the vet thinks. I have a clinic not too far away with multiple good bunny vets - I'm blessed in that way - but they closed at 5 and Oscar had this fit at like... 5:15. But fortunately it was after I was done with work for the week so I didn't have anything else to do today or tomorrow other than dote on him.

Unfortunately due to what his eyes are doing (it's hard to describe) I get the feeling there is some neurological damage... he is somewhere upwards of 8 years old so it wouldn't be shocking that he might have had a stroke or something. But he is still being the goodest boi in spite of how scared and messed up he must feel - I put him in his litterbox with a bunch of fresh hay, thinking maybe he'd feel better in familiar surroundings than on my bed surrounded by pillows, and first thing he did? Pee. After apparently holding it while on my bed for a couple hours. He ate some of his dinner while I held it in my hand right in front of his mouth so his wobbly head could find it, and then bounced crookedly across the room to sploot in his favorite spot, so I am somewhat less frantic than I was when I commented earlier.

...And just after I typed that he had another fit and I thought he was about to leave me... but I held him long enough and steady enough that he managed to stand back up and can hop a little again. My poor little man. I get the feeling I am not going to sleep tonight. But indeed, I had already been wondering if I should put him in a small carrier overnight padded with lots of towels, and that most recent fit decided it.

God, I'm so sorry for you and your boy, who is indeed a very good boy.

Let's hope the vet can help him!

After a night of not sleeping and checking on him constantly, I'm not quite in panic mode anymore... which is good because the earliest the vets could fit him in (since he's eating, drinking, pooping, and trying to move around when I let him, not a dire "omg come in right now" emergency) is 3pm.

I wonder if I might be able to get some sleep before then. Or if it's a good idea to try. :/

I took the day off work and my listless hen to the vet, and got her an off label dose of Revolution for her fleas and mites. I'm gonna take her for a bath tomorrow if she lives through the night, the vet techs who do baths weren't in today. At least she's eating, even if she's also falling over a lot.

I slept most of the day leading up to her appointment and I'm still tired. I think maybe I'm as anemic as my hen. I need to eat more dark green veggies.

I really want a big salad and don't like any of the premade ones from stores around here; I may end up buying a bag of baby lettuce and just dumping dressing on it since I lack the energy and ingredients to make the one I really want.

:( My sympathies. I was going to comment yesterday (? the days blend together) hoping your hen pulls through, and right now I am really feeling the "if she lives through the night" part. :/

Got some good news in this shitty week. My dad has gone to the doctor for the first time in like 15 years. His blood work was pretty good (nothing super high) and he has no clots in his veins/arteries.

also, i was super freezing on account of hormones. i had the little heater in my office turned up to 80 and was still cold. now i'm home and in winter pajamas and still cold.

going to bed really, really soon.

So this seems an odd thing to share, but it was very touching and it's proably something a lot of people don't know about.

At the funeral/memorial/wake, the do a 'dispatch call'. Someone at comms/911 will call the deceased person's badge number and wait for the response:
'1917...'
'1917 Comms'
'1917 Comms'
'There is no reply....' And then a short 'regret to announce the death of' and years in service and 'our friend and hero' kind of speech, and end with 'We've got this, brother/sister'.

There was a funeral today for a firefighter from a mutual aide company, and I was in the office when the dispatch call came. I didn't even know the guy, and I cried. It's really...a very cool thing.

I spent the entire day trying to get home on buses and trains after my train broke down in a tiny town. The staff was unprepared. I arrived home at 20:00 instead of 08:00.... The cats were hungry and happy to see me.
