I don't think it's a preference more than until very recently, it wasn't mainstream to include lgbt+ characters.

Heck, even now in live action media it'll be either one or two characters as a side character or a main character who just says it as an aside once (a la "how much jewish characters are portrayed) and not pursue a romance

We're just now seeing a surge of concrete lgbt+ characters and possible ships in things like cartoons. But sometimes you want to watch something like say, a fighting anime, and ship people together, but it's currently hella unlikely they get together outside of gl/bl manga.
