Well, at least you're not claiming that celebrities are conspiring to gaslight you this time.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Just...make new accounts. How is this a problem in this day and age? I have like 2-3 accounts on literally every fandom space.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-25 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
well if you're finding that many 'slash media' to do that then more power to ya on your personal treasure hunt.

ah, that old photo. I remember being a gullible youngling in the 90s who believed the paranormal books when they said no one had ever debunked it or it was the only "real" photo of an actual ghost. young me didn't think nonfiction books could lie and omit. but they can. and they do.

(I believe it was a defect in the film iirc...it was an actual film photo taken during a time when a little too much exposure or a touch of moisture or even not winding the film correctly was the genuine explanation almost all of the time. the rest of the time was lens flare/dust particles/insects/the camera strap)

these days I'm more interested in how the stories came about - did someone embellish a real crime story? did someone straight up fucking write fiction and somehow it got reported as fact? did multiple different tales from the same location or same incident become conflated as a single story? That sort of anthropological etymology is way more fascinating to me than any thought that supernatural things are real and manifesting in improbable ways.

Don't be an asshole, nonny.

There's a similar phenomenon in Star Wars. Like, the Empire and Sith are cool, and everyone should feel free to write fic about Vader or wear Stormtrooper shirts or just stan Palpatine or whatnot. I can totally get that. But the moment people start with 'well actually, the Empire/Sith had a point' I wonder if they understood the movies.

I was never as into HP as I am into SW, but I got the same vibe from Death Eaters and their fans.

yeah I remember seeing stuff like that back in the early 2000s - I mostly wrote it off as dark fiction and stuck to my own interests in the fandom. But that being said, with the landscape of the internet changing so much in recent years with things like fanfics being accessible by phone alone - it's certainly easy to wonder how much of it is exploring dark fiction and how much is done with a more irl sinister undertone.

it sucks when that happens OP :( I usually end up revisiting fics I was obsessed with from past fandoms or look up old fanvids when that happens to me - but yeah that doesn't always help either.

Oh, so this is still a thing? I do wonder sometimes if the OG Pureblood stans with their Dark Mark tattoos ever feel awkward about it now that they're 40.

I don't know your whole story OP, but pretty much how things are on fandoms in recent years have worsened my social anxiety to a point that I barely talk to anyone online (Fandom Secrets is literally the place I comment and interact with the most due to anonymity)
Staying under the radar with little interaction has allowed me to take part without getting involved in drama or whatever batshittery is happening - but its also very isolating. Yet seeing how people will tear each other to shreds over the dumbest things simultaneously makes me glad not to engage with people who intend to die on their hills for absolutely dense reasons.

And that's one of the major reasons I don't like Astolat's Starry fic. That and its abhorrent classism.
