I don't think it's a preference more than until very recently, it wasn't mainstream to include lgbt+ characters.

Heck, even now in live action media it'll be either one or two characters as a side character or a main character who just says it as an aside once (a la "how much jewish characters are portrayed) and not pursue a romance

We're just now seeing a surge of concrete lgbt+ characters and possible ships in things like cartoons. But sometimes you want to watch something like say, a fighting anime, and ship people together, but it's currently hella unlikely they get together outside of gl/bl manga.

Yeah, I love seeing queer relationships, but (just like with het ones) the canon relationships are often...not that well written? I mean, it's great to be moving closer to equal opportunity there, but it was weird to find that I still often ship non-canon pairings.

Most of the time, canon pairings bore me, and that includes gay & lesbian ships. A lot of gay ships are created with one gay character and one idealized perfect prop to say all the right things and get married.

Sometimes the ships that grow out of subtext are just... more interesting than whatever canon relationship is being put through the standard beats of a Romance Arc.

ah, that old photo. I remember being a gullible youngling in the 90s who believed the paranormal books when they said no one had ever debunked it or it was the only "real" photo of an actual ghost. young me didn't think nonfiction books could lie and omit. but they can. and they do.

(I believe it was a defect in the film iirc...it was an actual film photo taken during a time when a little too much exposure or a touch of moisture or even not winding the film correctly was the genuine explanation almost all of the time. the rest of the time was lens flare/dust particles/insects/the camera strap)

these days I'm more interested in how the stories came about - did someone embellish a real crime story? did someone straight up fucking write fiction and somehow it got reported as fact? did multiple different tales from the same location or same incident become conflated as a single story? That sort of anthropological etymology is way more fascinating to me than any thought that supernatural things are real and manifesting in improbable ways.

I really, really don't believe in ghosts. It just makes no sense to me. I also feel like if I were a ghost with intelligence and independent thoughts, I would haunt someone like me to make a point but I've been in some creepy places and nothing has happened. And because someone always says it: I don't buy "they know you're not open to it" SUCH a cop out tbh.

HOWEVER, I bloody love a good haunted house story. Despite my lack of belief I eat all that shit up. I'm also really interested in the psychology of what makes people want to believe and how those who are already convinced (or not convinced, as is my case so I'm not totally unbiased) will take what they want from an allegedly haunted place.

I was addicted to Most Haunted in my teens. I stopped watching it because "orbs" just looked like flecks of dust floating around and even when something seemingly genuinely spooky happened they didn't do anything to show they didn't edit or manipulate the footage in some way. Or it was just a co-incidence. I remember one episode in a pub where a beer barrel started randomly rolling in the cellar, I was like...that could've just been unsettled by all your crew swanning around all day?

Most ghost photography, even the famous ones such as this, just look like e.g. double exposure to me.

I feel like this about every single aspect of those shows. I like hearing stories about spooky ghost things, even if I don't think they're real! But it insults my intelligence to present it the way they do, when so much of what they say and the way they depict things is clearly bullshit.

honeatly, hard same. I watch a lot of paranormal and such shows but the fact that a lot of them don’t show the photos (either they couldn’t transfer the photo or it was a blur and they decided not to show it anyway), leaves me questioning. I know quite a few are just for entertainment purposes, but I do believe if they had any evidence show up on camera it should be shown.

Same for Bigfoot and the giant hairy ape species across the world - so what if there are a lot of blobsquatches? At least it’s semi-tangible evidence. And so many native cultures and witnesses tell similar stories that not all of them can be hoaxing.

oooh, rich people crimes! I'm always interested in what makes fairly closed cultures (depending on the amount of wealth) turn on one of their own or alt protect one of their own, so this seems right up my alley.

There's a similar phenomenon in Star Wars. Like, the Empire and Sith are cool, and everyone should feel free to write fic about Vader or wear Stormtrooper shirts or just stan Palpatine or whatnot. I can totally get that. But the moment people start with 'well actually, the Empire/Sith had a point' I wonder if they understood the movies.

I was never as into HP as I am into SW, but I got the same vibe from Death Eaters and their fans.

it sucks when that happens OP :( I usually end up revisiting fics I was obsessed with from past fandoms or look up old fanvids when that happens to me - but yeah that doesn't always help either.

Maybe something like a creative challenge to help shake things up? Like finding a prompt list and consider how incorporating your doll with a theme/prompt would work? It doesn't have to be official or go through with actually taking a photo - you could possibly just think about how that would be, make list and see if any inspiration might come up?
