101. I do the same thing! I've even tried to teach myself how to read and walk better so I can do it as easily as she does. ...And sometimes I do it while humming "Belle".

113. For me it was Digimon fic!

115. What's so bad about getting married? Who says she can't have adventure after she's married? Baaaah, I'm sick and tired of hearing that a character isn't strong if she happens to have a guy in her life. I don't know about your mother, but my Mom has traveled all over the world since getting married and is still a strong, intelligent woman with a life of her own.
tl;dr: MARRIAGE ISN'T THE DEATH OF YOUR DREAMS.

126. If I'm thinking of the right actress, I liked her in some of the stuff she was in--but she lost a TON of respect for me after saying that it's impossible to be open-minded if you're a Republican. "You can only be open-minded if you agree with my opinions" is inheriently hypocritical.

130. ...She's an actual Princess! I don't see anythign wrong with it! I get much more bothered when Mulan gets included because, um...not a Princess, at all. Great character. But not a Princess.

Wow I'm showing my Disney nerd side today.

115 OP

OMG BECAUSE THAT'S TOTALLY WHAT I SAID. =D

There is nothing wrong with getting married. There is nothing wrong with love or falling in love or having a man in your life.

What is wrong, and what I blame Disney fully and utterly for in this case, is the constant, unerring and unrelenting insinuation that Belle wasn't truly happy until she got hitched. The movie ended with her dancing in a fucking ball gown; not with her reading to the Prince; not with the two of them off for adventures. No. Dancing, like a good little Disney princess. "See? Pretty dress! Princess! Now she's finally happy!"

That's my problem. But thanks for putting words in my mouth.

Bb, if everyone is 'misunderstanding' your secret, it usually means you didn't do a good job of expressing yourself. Stop getting pissed at every one for your failure at communication.

THIS.

Re: 115 OP

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Where in the world is that in the movie? She's unhappy because she's surrounded by ignorant people that don't want to think for themselves and don't think that a woman should want to read and have adventures. The Beast doesn't make her happy because "OMG YAY I'M MARRIED NOW", she's happy with the Beast because he sees her "strange" traits as good things and actively encourages them (like supplying her with the huge library). Also, I think that the movie doesn't show it as "Belle needs the Beast"-- it's the other way around. THE BEAST is the one that needs Belle.

Misunderstanding you != putting words in your mouth.

//, I think that the movie doesn't show it as "Belle needs the Beast"-- it's the other way around. THE BEAST is the one that needs Belle.//

Thank you, thank you! Belle was the active one who wore the pants (or the skirt) in the relationship, because she confronted the Beast and told him "hey sir, your'e doing it WRONG". Which is what he urgently *needed* to change from the jerkass he was into the great guy he ended up as.

I've seen the Beast accused of being abusive and horrible, Belle being called "weak and submissive" and the whole movie referred to as "promotion of female abuse". Makes me go all "WTF" every single time.

Re: 115 OP

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
UGH, I get so irrationally angry when people portray Belle as a battered woman that can't stand up for herself. The Beast rarely even TOUCHES her, and at one point when he yells at her too much she marches straight out the door, "promise or no promise". The only reason she went back is because he made an active effort to apologize and treat her better. She only starts falling in love with him when he starts being sweet and kind! THIS IS NOT AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP, and Belle has a backbone, dang it!

Yeah, favorite movie ever, so I get very emotional about it. >.>;

Re: 115 OP

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know! whenever I see people dismiss Belle's feelings for Beast as "Stockholm Syndrome" and/or bash the movie with that in mind, I go all "okay, *what* movie where you watching? Because that's NOT Beauty and the Beast".

Belle defied a whole town by reading complicated books and wanting more in her life, defied the storngest and most influential man in there for rejecting his marriage proposal, went to rescue her dad single-handedly, changed the lives of *everyone* in the castle... And despite all her awesome, she's STILL accused of weakness and/or throwing her dreams away?

Head on, apply directly to the forehead. Repeteadly. Nonstop.

Re: 115 OP (excuse me, being a lazy mun)

[identity profile] quackingly.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to feel like rampant "feminism" (note the quotation marks, I'm aware this isn't true feminism) has made it so that a female character can't be viewed as "strong" unless she's some sort of badass, unemotional fighting machine. Strength can be shown in more ways than how many men you can drop kick. I don't think having emotions is a bad thing, either.

Really, I'm about ready to rewatch the movie next chance I get and write up an essay on their relationship for Ship Manifesto. XD; I've seen this sort of stuff about Belle way too much.

Re: 115 OP (excuse me, being a lazy mun)

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, so much. I detest the idea that you can't be sensitive *and* strong if you're female, or something. Kinda goes against the whole idea of "female liberation", you know? >>

Please do! Sounds like an awesome idea, after all. Belle/Beast needs more love, they're awesome. =D

PS: Yay for Princess Tutu RP! <3

Re: 115 OP (excuse me, being a lazy mun)

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Mmhm. To me, it's sort of a step backwards. We're labeling stereotypical "male" traits onto women in order to make them seem "strong"--which isn't always a bad thing (a female in a typical male role is interesting to explore in fiction, I think), but can often be. I'd rather see more encouragement for men being able to be emotional and take an interest in the arts without the assumption that they must be gay or unmanly.

I actually haven't thought too much about their relationship before but examining them in this sort of context is making me appreciate the movie even more. XD Which I keep thinking I've hit the point where I can't love the movie more but I never do.

P.S. Eee, Princess Tutu fan! <3

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Joyfully and happily rampant feminist here. I agree; I feel that a lot of commentators bash female characters and then turn around to say, "No, we're doing this because we want to Empower Women! Just as long as they Q, H, A, and Z and never S, P, V, and B."

And it's so counter-productive.

THIS. Someone besides me finally said it. Huzzah!

Re: 115 OP

Woah woah woah. The only one in the entire town who said that Belle was anything other than odd was that moron Gaston. (Well, and those three girls who were in love with Gaston. But that had nothing to do with her reading.) You can't judge the entire town by how Gaston treats her.

And from their perspective Belle was odd. They didn't say she was bad. Gaston was the only one in the entire movie who even implied she should stop.

Re: 115 OP

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC, their attitude was still condescending towards her. Like "oh, why can't this girl be more like the others? She's always reading, always a cloud cuckoo lander! Unlike us!"

It might have not been as direct as Gaston's own PoV, but it still implied that Belle's intrests weren't seen in the best light.

Re: 115 OP

Totally agree!

Everything you said is so absolutely true. Especially:

Also, I think that the movie doesn't show it as "Belle needs the Beast"-- it's the other way around. THE BEAST is the one that needs Belle.

That is pretty much the best description of their relationship I've ever seen.

Or at the very least, you weren't watching television in the 90's and need to go find some old tapes of that show RIGHT NOW.

Re: 115 OP

Thanks for making that so clear in your secret.

Wait, you didn't.

Re: 115 OP

If you need to explain your secret in a comment, well, maybe you didn't express your idea as well as you thought you did?

Re: 115 OP

[identity profile] carbonatedh2o.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now that you've put it that way, I totally understand. Yeah, it did end with her dancing in a ballgown, which was kind of stupid. I always found that ending to be stupid, and do wish that they had a different ending that highlighted what kind of a life they would have rather than them having a clichéd ballroom scene.

I like to think that they had an adventurous life after marrying (if they did marry), but I do agree that the ending was completely clichéd.

I completely agree!
