Female centered drama or comedy

(Anonymous) 2021-07-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just finished Dead to Me and I'd appreciate some recommendations for female character centered tv shows. I watch most genres but I'm kind of most interested in drama or comedy right now. Thank you, anybody who offers suggestions.

It is nothing like Dead to Me, but Madam Secretary is a great female-led drama show. Killing Eve is always awesome if you haven't watched yet. Jane the Virgin is both funny and full of drama. Rizzoli and Isles is basically the best female-led crime show in my opinion.

Thank you! I love Killing Eve and I've never seen Madam Secretary but I heard good things from my sister.

If you don't mind non-english media and subtitles, I highly recommend Hotel Del Luna and Hello Me on Netflix. Both are Korean shows and while they are very, very different in genre they focus wonderfully on the female leads.

Hello Me: is more of a slice-of-life drama with comedy aspects but not without it's heavy moments, without spoiling something very bad(not rape/sexual assault) happens to the female lead as a kid and she's basically Fucked Up as a result. There's a little romance but it's not given a huge amount of focus as the main story is about the lead getting better and finding herself again.

Hotel Del Luna: is a horror+character piece with the female lead as the central focus of the story. It's more a ghost of the week type series with the recovery/redemption/healing of the female lead being the core focus as she is very messy and damaged. The romance of this show is a lot more pronounced however so if you're not a fan of that then give it a pass but I didn't care about the romantic subplot and I still thought it was a really solid show.

We Are Lady Parts is a hilarious and endearing show about a group of Muslim-British girls and their punk band, highly recommended!

Comedy: Absolutely Fabulous. 1990 sitcom set in London with two "go-getting" creative types (Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders) plus the mother of one of them (June Whitfield) and the daughter (Julia Sawalha).

Slightly less female-centric - "Allo Allo". Farce set in WW2 occupied France. Female
resistance leaders, an elderly ex nightclub-dancer, a German secretary with a nice line in loud announcements. Various male characters, all equally funny.

Drama: The Politician's Wife, with Juliet Stephenson in the lead. Wife takes on Parliament and...

Teenage Bounty Hunters - a flawed but enoyable dramedy. One of the flaws being a cliffhanger ending and has been cancelled but I still think it's worth watching.

Hacks - doesn't live up to the 'dark mentorship' description so far (haven't finished it) but Jean Smart is great.

Motherland:Fort Salem - I just started this but pretty interesting dark drama about an alternate reality world where witches are real and dealing with the conscription to the military.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend is an excellent drama/comedy. The main character is a successful female lawyer who one day realises the last time she truly felt happy was during a teenage romance. She packs up her entire life and moves to the ex-boyfriend's hometown to try and recapture that feeling. Wacky hijinks ensue but the show also spends a lot of time seriously exploring issues of mental health, sexuality, sexism and more. It's also a musical.

This intro captures the style of the show the best.

I just can't decide whether I want a Doctor Who or Babylon 5 rewatch. I've gotten excited about both again.

What if you split the difference and do a Greatest Hits rewatch? I'm going to do that with Supernatural and X-Files because they complement each other.
