I don't have whichever of the streaming services necessary to watch it, sadly, but while representation is nice, it doesn't mean everyone in every group represented is going to like every instance of representation.

I mean I'm pretty sure that not every straight person likes every straight romance portrayed in TV/movies. And glad as I am when asexuality is acknowledged, doesn't mean I like every ace character or will watch shows just because they have an ace characters. They get some points for it but doesn't mean they're going to be a good show necessarily.

DISCO has a lot of those points for various things they're apparently doing on the show, but I can't say I actually know whether it or any of its characters/relationships is any good or not. (I watched the premiere because it aired on actual CBS affiliates, and thought it had promise, but that's it.)

My thoughts exactly. I can respect that Dicovery just isn't my thing, but their relationship just doesn't feel interesting enough for me to get invested in. By comparison I felt more drawn to the relationship dynamics between Garak and Bashir or Picard and Q, and they weren't even 'official.'

I like a lot of the individual characters on Discovery, but man their romances really do just suck. Which tbh does give me a bit of a laugh because it's equal opportunity dull at least? Saying that they're not so bad they make me annoyed or anything, I'm just politely uninterested in the couples on this show while I enjoy the rest of it, so hey, could be worse.

Am I the only one confused by this secret? Do you mean you don't like the characters Burnham and Stamets, or do you mean you don't like Culber and Stamets (in particular, their relationship)?

If the latter, I agree, I always thought their relationship/chemistry was lackluster, although I suppose they're convincing enough as a very shmoopy couple even if I have zero investment in their relationship. But yeah, with so many other gay multiracial ships to ship in DISCO, I don't really feel bad about being meh about just this one.

If the former, well, Burnham is easily one of my fave Star Trek characters so I don't really agree but to each their own.

I love Michael so much but yeah, I agree 100%: not every show has to be for me and that's okay! People who complain about representation as if every show on TV should cater to them is so weird.

Eh, I'm gonna be the dissenting opinion here and say (as a queer person) that there's nothing wrong with saying that a canon queer relationship doesn't work for you. Canon queer ships aren't above criticism any more than canon het ships are; they can be just as badly written and people shouldn't feel like they can't point out when a canon queer ship has an aspect that they don't feel was handled well, because the idea that we should just be happy with any representation we get is bull. The only way writers will know to do better is if people speak up about why a ship didn't work for them.

I used to really like her content but her constant vibe during the Slenderman vid that the entire internet needs to be family friendly because “think of the children” really ticked me off.

(She pitched PhotoshopPhriday as something solely designed to mislead kids, rather than a bunch of not-kids just having fun with a challenge. Because her kid believes everything they see on the internet, it shouldn’t be there if it’s fictional, rather than she should tell her kids the difference and/or parent their internet use properly.)

THEN came her shitty half-arsed initial response about Shane Dawson. Yes, she later made a much stronger one later when she was aware of more information. But her initial response was kinda “welp, he’s a bit of a douche but I like his makeup”.

Her vids are usually so well-researched. And I think that’s the problem. The pearl-clutching and ignorance came out of nowhere. Every time her vids pop up in my feed, I get disappointed in her again. (I have unsubbbed, but the alogrithm).

I'm avoiding all these unnecessary millennial-show reboots like the plague*. I'm happy to let the shows and characters stay as they are in my childhood and if I want to know about their futures, I'll read fanfic. Reboots like this never work. Not having one of the most important characters should have been a huge red flag to the creators.

*I know the phrase "avoid it like the plague" has lost all meaning since we all found out that humans don't avoid the plague, but whatever.
