It's hardly a deliberate misread when the exact nature of Katara and Sokka's decision to go with Aang is exactly the difference between danger and safety. It's nothing like Jet's permanent displacement and it's weird to pretend it is.

They weren't much safer there. Their decision wasn't based on the difference between danger and safety at all, because the safety The had there wouldn't last if they didn't help and they knew it. Jet was misplaced, but his situation at the start of his introduction wasn't any worse.
