People like OOC versions of the characters

So?

So it gets old to see people get deeply offended that others don't treat fanon based on a fanfic as if it were actual Les Mis canon (including huffy posts declaring actual canon to be stupid and incorrect if it disagrees with the favored fanon), and to see them get stroppy with fans of the actual canon who dare publicly wish that modern au stuff would be tagged as such or who point out that it's a very silly look to make "deep character analysis" posts when you aren't remotely familiar with the novel or, in some cases, apparently with the musical either

NAYRT.

I'm not in the same fandom but I've tried to have discussions with fans who had never read/seen the canon, yet insisted that their personal opinion was the correct one, and it's fucking infuriating. It absolutely brings to mind the whole 'my ignorance is as good if not better than your fact' kind of people, and yeah they're annoying as fuck to deal with because they will never realise that their lack of knowledge actually means they don't get to talk about the canon like they're an expert.

You can enjoy something without knowing the canon, it's not how I go about my fic/fandom-consumption but I can get people doing this, but you actually cannot have an informed opinion of it if you've never SEEN it. That's literally how that works.

so

in other words

they don't actually like the characters at all

shrug

soooo just to be clear, you think it's stupid for someone to be annoyed that a lot of people in their fandom 1) don't like or care about the actual media/characters the fandom is based on, and 2) keep trying to replace those characters with their own OCs while getting pissy that others prefer the actual canon characters?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-03 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

I mean, not the part about getting pissy about it. Everyone needs to take a chill pill.
