That sounds really awful, and I'm sorry he's going through that :(. It's amazing how some people can't seem to respect or grasp the concept of boundaries, or privacy.

I hope he can manage to find the privacy and peace he longs for at some point.

Yeah the Chinese entertainment industry is particularly... nuts. And this isn't to say that the west is so much better or what have you, but more that over there it's encouraged for fans to be as entitled and insane as they want towards their faves, to the point where literal stalking isn't really dealt with and rival companies will literally make up horrible rumors to try and tank a star's career, all because it drives product sales up. I have a few Chinese actors I like and keep up with and I always hope that they've got a good support network to help them deal with the crazy because it really seems like they need it.

I'm not an expert in how the Chinese entertainment industry or fandom works, but what I've heard sounds really alarming. This isn't the first time his privacy has been violated - someone got a hold of his personal cell number and sold it, so he was bombarded with calls. There have been previous incidents of people putting tracking devices on his car, so this is just... more of the same. That's just nuts.

But the socially acceptable stuff also sounds kind of... bad and toxic? It's one thing for fans to encourage each other to support their fave by buying products, etc. (a bit weird, but hey, it's their money) but the fact that they've also got the power to do the opposite and actually hurt someone's career over something they had zero control over is insane. (But that's more about the whole Xiao Zhan thing, not so much Wang Yibo.)

One of my fave actors was recently chased down and mobbed at an airport, which is utterly terrifying to think about, he's a stranger, not a friend and yet people hounded him. He released a statement very politely telling fans to fuck off with that shit but still the fact that it happened was ridiculous in the first place.

Yeah the excessive shilling of whatever appliance/book/clothing/etc is not something I understand, but that's whatever to me, fans can do what they want with their cash to support their faves. But the actual career damage companies will try to inflict on stars is crazy, like the main one is dating rumors, which in C-net is a pretty big deal as they have a similar thing to K-idol fandom where they want their talent to appear 'available' to their fans(if this is applicable, because a few actors I like are married and it's not harmed their careers). But others go as far as claiming an actor/singer to be against the CCP or support something that could get them into actual legal trouble and it's fucking nuts.

I'm not into either of those dudes, but yeah that was fucked up. Like, it's celeb stanning taken to a whole terrifying level.

tbh I'm genuinely impressed whenever a piece of media goes through with killing a child. Is it terrible and tragic? Absolutely! And it should be!

But I've always found it a weird narrative thing that the small, defenseless child is going to survive all the shit that grown adults don't. It doesn't make logical sense so when a series has the child die I'm always impressed that they followed through with it instead of playing it safe.

This rather assumes the people who are writing these fics have a good grasp of what is and is not OOC. I'm not familiar with the Les Miserables fandom, but in general, I do not have the confidence you seem to have re: solid characterization.

So it gets old to see people get deeply offended that others don't treat fanon based on a fanfic as if it were actual Les Mis canon (including huffy posts declaring actual canon to be stupid and incorrect if it disagrees with the favored fanon), and to see them get stroppy with fans of the actual canon who dare publicly wish that modern au stuff would be tagged as such or who point out that it's a very silly look to make "deep character analysis" posts when you aren't remotely familiar with the novel or, in some cases, apparently with the musical either

Yeah, you can't. Not OP but you can't separate them out because they're everywhere. You can't filter out modern AUs on AO3 because half the people writing them don't think they're writing AUs. You can't filter them out in the tumblr tags because they outnumber the canon-based stuff dramatically. The people who are interested in canon sometimes manage to come together in little beseiged circles and have fun inside, and if you stick around for awhile you can usually find one that will welcome you, but that's about the best you can do. (And the one I was in finally fell under the constant attacks insisting it was cliquish and elitist for preferring canon setting and enjoying historical research...)

(OP if you aren't following pilferingapples on tumblr you should be. I thnk there's a couple good discords too but I'm in the loop enough anymore to be on them.)
