Would it be a big deal to make an account? You don't need to post, but I'm wondering how you keep on top of following people without an account. I can barely remember the handles of people I know and follow.

AYRT--I literally have zero social media accounts unless Ao3 counts, and I've never had any in 25+ years of being online. I don't intend to start for twitter.

As for people I follow, there's maybe two or three I check regularly and another five or so I'll check every so often.

Is the concern behind not wanting to connect real life info to social media accounts, because I can understand that, but you could make a 'fake' email to create a handle to solve the log in problem. To be honest it wouldn't surprise me if most social media sites require you to log in to browse/read.

... no offense, but that seems like you're just cutting off your own nose to spite your face. You don't actually have to post anything yourself if you don't want to, but twitter is meant to be a social network, which means it's designed for people to keep up with others by following them/favoriting things.

AYRT--I don't care what it was designed for, that's not how I'd use it even if I got an account, which I'm hoping I won't have to do.

I dislike the whole idea of social media tbh; if tumblr wasn't so badly designed I might sign up just because the monetization and tracking of users is done so poorly it feels like a joke. But then, if it were better designed it'd probably do a better job at making money off user info.

No, I was hoping someone here would know a way to keep treating twitter like an open website and not have to sign up. If I was just complaining and not hoping for a fix that doesn't involve making an account, I would've made a vent thread and not asked a question.

AYRT--this is bizarre. I've never spoken to anyone who doesn't think of the monetization and tracking of user data as at best a necessary evil because servers and programmers have to be paid for somehow, before.

I know there's no escaping user tracking, but acting like opting out to the extent possible is, idk, something to be furious about is weird. And I'm not even particularly vigorous about it because I'm not tech savvy enough to be.

I'm not judging people who sign up for social media sites, I buy from amazon and use a smartphone, so any digital privacy I have is absolutely an illusion.

I can't imagine trying to follow people on Twitter without having an account. It's really not set up for that at all.

Yeah, unless you bookmarked individual accounts but that seems like more effort than making a burner email/anon account if the concern is it being connected to real life information.

I fully understand people who want/need to avoid social media, but trying to use it while avoiding the way it is intended to be used seems weird.

OP here and unless I posted about hating my job (I don't but...) there's no reason I couldn't have a twitter linked to a real email (only have one for work and the same personal one since 1995 I think) I just don't like the whole "if you're not the customer you're the product" aspect of social media, even though I'm super boring irl. And I think of checking individual creator's twitter (and tumblr) accounts like visiting individual websites.

I get being contemptuous because you're right, it's impossible to stay anonymous on the internet. And I hate it when people tell me to relax when I'm pissed off. But why do you care what social media accounts anon randos on FS use or not?

Because you're asking to have your cake and eat it, too, when you can't. You want to use the social media site's features, but don't use the site at all in the ways to engage with it properly. Does it suck your data is collected and sold? Yeah. But there's nothing you can do about it, being online at all means Google and Microsoft have your info.

Exactly. Twitter is designed to be used a certain way, and if you're going to insist on not using it the way it was designed, you have to accept that it's going to be clunky and awkward and that you might not be able to do some things/some things may not work properly. Either you suck it up and deal or you, you know, use the site the way it was meant to be used.
