I stopped watching House after the ep where he wasn't in pain and was nice to patients for that reason. Means that he can be nice, be a better doctor.

Pain really fucks you up.

I spent my childhood and teenage years in constant pain and was probably an asshole too tbh. I only realised it ten years or so later, once I got a diagnosis and pain killers that actually worked.

I did relate to him back then, now that I think about it.

Even now, even though I'm much better and can sometimes spend a week with minimal pain, I still can't take media with characters who've got chronic pain or arm issues.

idk, I think "can" is doing some work there, since pain is the type of signal than can genuinely make it harder to regulate mood. to me that means that maybe he should just do research...from a distance.

Yeah, that on the one hand makes me somewhat more sympathetic to him, but also much more sure that he's fundamentally in the wrong job, and he and everyone else would be happier and better off if he was in a research job.

Your lack of sympathy is disturbing.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-04 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
No it isn't. As the anons said above, he's clearly in the wrong job, and there's only so much pain can be an excuse for how he goes about the emotional aspects of the job. It's one thing to not have perfect bedside manner all the time, but House almost never has any to speak of. AYRT is right to criticize him for only treating his patients well when he's not in pain.

And this is coming from someone who's suffered from chronic abdominal pain her entire life, and manages to not be a jackass to everyone all the time. It's not as easy for everyone who also suffers, I understand that. But just because he has chronic pain and doesn't handle it well, doesn't mean everyone has to like or respect him for the way he acts towards people. Especially because many of his patients, naturally, are in the hospital because they're very sick or in pain also. And they don't deserve to be captive to the doctor with the worst attitude in the hospital.

You can think he's in the wrong job and still feel sympathy.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-04 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And I do. But AYRT might not, and there's nothing disturbing about that. People have different limits. AYRT might acknowledge that he has it hard, but can't accept that as an excuse. That's fine.

I do accept that as an excuse, even though I personally don't lash out because of my chronic pain like House does. But either way, I don't disagree with anything you're saying except that AYRT not excusing House being disturbing. I do respect your empathy though, and I'm being sincere when I say that.

It's not an excuse, no, but I feel for anyone stuck in the unmitigating hell that is chronic pain.

anon that mentioned the ep

Replying to anon who suffers from pain issue that their life is hell is an asshole move. It makes your complaint about lack of sympathy a joke. I'm sure that anon lives full and happy life like the rest of us despite their issues.

Thank you nonny, I really appreciate this comment!

(Anonymous) 2021-08-04 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Like, if AYRT had merely said that they didn't care if his assholishness was caused by chronic pain, he was still an asshole and they didn't like him, that would be absolutely valid. But "He's an asshole because he's in pain which means he could choose not to be?" No. No, that is very much NOT what that means. How did they even come to such a horrible take?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-04 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm really glad someone else picked up on this too.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-04 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Their phrasing could have been better tbh.

I'm ESL and admitedly I could work on my phradsing. What I meant is that House knows what a bedside manner is and he can be good with people. Speaking as someone who's been to hospitals a lot, doctor-patient relationship matters, as well as getting basic human courtesy from staff.
