Yeah. I like Hugh Laurie a lot, but the character always walks a fine line between abrasive genius and asshole, and my tolerance for asshole characters has gone waaaay down in recent years thanks to U.S. politics.

I stopped watching House after the ep where he wasn't in pain and was nice to patients for that reason. Means that he can be nice, be a better doctor.

I watched about 8 episodes and decided the show wasn't for me because almost every character annoyed me but I absolutely hated House.

I wasn't a kid when it aired, so I'm hoping I'd still enjoy House even though I haven't seen the show since it went off the air. Bit worried to go and check now.

But I do know what you mean. I had a similar experience with The X-Files. Loved it when I was a kid, but these days conspiracy theories just aren't that fun anymore.

I wasn’t a kid but I did love the early seasons and especially him. But I really don’t think I would now, the world just seems like a crappier place and I don’t have the energy for even a fictional asshole these days.

I like/liked House, but the self-righteousness of some of the other characters was a huge turn-off, as was a lot of the preachy crap that got pushed on House.

Yeah, he's a mess, he's an asshole, and in real life, he's putting people in danger. On tv - I had fun. But it's not a show i can/do watch a lot or anything.

I have a thing for prickly, intelligent assholes who act aloof and indifferent but are full of deep inner turmoil and insecurity. So I might still like him even now. But there's also a distinct chance I wouldn't, because yeah, being insensitive and hurtful because other people are stupid and you're sick of dealing with idiots (or whatever) feels like immature, judgmental bullshit, far more than it used to.

I still love those characters when the narrative recognizes their bullshit as bullshit, recognizes that they're a bit pathetic underneath is all, and challenges them to change. But when the narrative instead seems to uncritically glory in how much smarter and cooler and better they are than all the sheeple, that's a huge nope from me.

From what I recall, there was some of both in House. He was framed as both awesome and a mess. But I suspect the narrative came down a bit too much on the "awesome" side of the equation for my present-day liking--even if I ignore the later seasons.

i always say i like this show and it's not that i don't like it, but it definitely ends up being background noise more often than not and i find i really only get invested when chase is on screen.

I still love the first three seasons but the rest of the show became intolerable, and not just because of House getting crazier and nastier in the later seasons.

The reason I glommed so hard onto House was that I have been in constant pain for years and I kept hearing the toxic narrative that suffering is supposed to make you a better person, so it was a tremendous relief to see ANY story that countered that narrative.

I loved it in High School but I absolutely cannot watch it now. My tolerance for assholes who treat people poorly is less than zero.

I think there are some shows where the conceit only works for you the first time you see it and i thinks it's different for everyone.

house's problem for me was less that he's an asshole and more than so much of his presence was his assholishness. i like my asshole genuises with a little more time in genius mode

I feel that. I used to love having people reach out to me or respond to me in fandom spaces. But ever since my social anxiety and depression got worse, people trying to talk to me online sometimes makes me feel like I'm going to throw up.

I still leave comments when I have something to say on fic and art, but then I feel like it's an obligation to keep doing that when new chapters and and art come out, and I struggle to come up with anything while worrying about using the same compliments twice.

So I want to join some Discords, but it's also something that scares me. Maybe it's possible to just lurk there until it gets easier to talk.

I saw this in the comment secrets thread and thought wow, can't believe someone did that and thought it was okay... and also can't believe that so many people hadn't heard of Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising, but that's another story. It's a shame because the cover art is very pretty?

Good parents in fics are great! They should eather be terrible for the h/c or perfect for fluff, me thinks.
I doubt that actual parents could be offended by anything as it's such a broad category that surely they won't think this or that is about them in particular.
