Re: Inspired by 5 - Parents in fics

Not so much my taste in pre-existing, well-fleshed-out canon parents. I have noticed that I have a thing for what I call "fail-dads" (see: AJ-era Phoenix Wright, FFVIII's Laguna, Tiger & Bunny's Kotetsu) but that's more about the type of character they are (really genuinely trying their best but full of lulzy fail) than about the kind of parent specifically, or even about them being parents.

I will readily admit that some of my own parental issues have influenced the way I write some family relationships when there aren't many details, though. Not like "I am going to give this character the same issues" or "I am going to make sure this character has none of those issues" - but just "given the evidence in canon, I don't think this character had a good relationship with their parent; hey I know that sort of bitterness and estrangement well". Or occasionally "This character seems to have handled [situation] well, so I assume their parents handled things than mine on that topic".
