Inspired by 5 - Parents in fics

Has your childhood affected your taste in fictional parents?

Nah. Different types of fictional parents fit different types of fiction. Authors, though? Sure. If it's clear that the author thinks that their overbearing parents who rifle through their kids' belongings and read their texts are just being good parents or if the author thinks that the worst thing a parent can do is not buy their kid some expensive thing... yeah, that's no good.

No, but it has affected my taste in shows. I won't watch a show if bad parenting is portrayed as good.

Not so much my taste in pre-existing, well-fleshed-out canon parents. I have noticed that I have a thing for what I call "fail-dads" (see: AJ-era Phoenix Wright, FFVIII's Laguna, Tiger & Bunny's Kotetsu) but that's more about the type of character they are (really genuinely trying their best but full of lulzy fail) than about the kind of parent specifically, or even about them being parents.

I will readily admit that some of my own parental issues have influenced the way I write some family relationships when there aren't many details, though. Not like "I am going to give this character the same issues" or "I am going to make sure this character has none of those issues" - but just "given the evidence in canon, I don't think this character had a good relationship with their parent; hey I know that sort of bitterness and estrangement well". Or occasionally "This character seems to have handled [situation] well, so I assume their parents handled things than mine on that topic".

I can't deal with coming out storylines where the parents work through their issues and have character development. I can handle coming out storylines where the parents are 100% supportive or 100% shit, but the parents having an arc where they get better hurts too much because I know my own parents will never make that effort lmao. Unfortunately that rules out, like, a lot of really good stories.

Probably. I'm more into reading about mentor figures than parents honestly. But what I like is mentors who explain things to their protege, who are protective without being over-protective, and who let their protege be their own person.

My late father was a fantastic and caring parent, and there is a particular flavor of Nurturing Dad that just is the world to me, but also, like... I have ZERO patience for dads who half-ass their relationships with their kids (and partners!), like... it's one thing for a character to struggle with doing right because there are problems getting in the way, but you have to see him fight like hell to make it to that recital or what have you. Dads who can't remember basic information about their children and don't care? Disgusting, throw the whole man out.

(I mean my mother is awesome and I enjoy seeing TV moms that remind me of her, but like... it's definitely more common to see TV moms that are caring and attentive even when they work outside the home, and to see the dads just be useless at best)

Yes. I'm really uncomfortable with good moms in fiction because my mom was terrible and so I don't have anything good to feel about a mom. I love good dads in fiction, though, because my dad just wasn't around and so the fantasy is easier to reach for.

(and honestly there aren't that many good moms in fantasy novels, which is most of what I read anyway. they're usually dead.)

Yes. I can't take anything about parents or parental relationships in fiction and I always play an orphan when I can (roleplay, video games).

My parents weren't even that bad in hindsight. My mother just despised any kind of overt emotion (it was a form of weakness according to her) and my father, who was a very involved dad though, ridiculed any kind of attempt at being emotionally open or serious.

It didn't fuck me up as much as you could expect, except for the fact that I'm not very good at empathising with people I find weak (I'm working on it though).

it hasn't affected my taste in fictional parents, but it's much harder for me to be sympathetic to parents without their POV. And parents with expectations, ANY, for their kids get my hardest judgment for me.

For sure. I couldn't stand parents in fiction. Then I became a parent, and now I have the love for my kid to relate that relationship to. It's made me like parents in fiction.
