It is because at that time the actor's head was too small for his shoulders. Change my mind.

I don't hate him, but I've grown to dislike him more every time I rewatch. For me it is that he's arrogant and self-focused even when he's doing the right thing. And he's just dull. Honestly I love Angelus and wish that we'd gotten less of Angel and more of Angelus.

That being said, I still ship all combos of Buffy/Angel/Spike and also all Fanged Four combos. Even though Angel bugs me a lot, he still has lots of chemistry with everyone.

I'm gonna be honest, I loathe Angel/Spike as a pairing. Not Spike/Angelus, that's fucked up and fascinating, but Spike/Angel is just ... self-loathing, the pairing. It does less than nothing for me. Angel just sucks the joy out of everything he's in.

I adore Spike/Dru, though, and Spike/Darla is a weird and twisted and kinda fascinating thought. I kinda wish Drusilla had been around more. She was far and away my favourite of the Fanged Four. Possibly my favourite vampire in the series full stop, actually.

Spike/Dru is one of my few and far between m/f 'ships that I absolutely adore.

I really dislike Boreanaz but I also prefer Angel to Buffy

I just vibe with it more

Boreanaz as a person is terrible. Also, his next big role was as a character who was a terrible person that the show (Bones) always portrayed as right, even when he wasn't. So to a certain extend I do think maybe this colors how I see Angel on rewatches. He is really great at playing evil, though. Angelus is a whole lot of fun.

I think there's definitely a whole class of actors who fall into that category - guys who are genuinely talented but all they want to do is play the smart, charming, clever guy who's right about everything, and when they do it comes off as unbearably smarmy and smug. Bruce Willis is another guy I can't stand for that exact reason.

Oh wait, what's up with Boreanaz?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I know he cheated on his wife when she was pregnant and that he was sued for sexual harassment by someone on the Bones set, but am not sure if that's the end of it.

He cheated on his wife and then was really smug after and talking about how he was happy he went through that because he learned a lot.

tbf, that only makes him like the third or fourth worst person involved with btvs

Who else besides Whedon was awful?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nicholas Brendan was arrested for domestic assault, among many, many other things. I've got fuzzy recollections of other cast and crew members having their own issues, but I'd have to do some research to see if any of them were objectively worse than an extramarital affair that ended in reconciliation and the married couple starting a nail polish company with their friends. Either way, Boreanz is at most a distant third behind Whedon and Brendan.

Went to a convention partially to meet Amber Heard and Nick Brandon was the other guest; Friend and I saw Nick sucking face with a fan in the hallway. He looked greasy and like he hadn't showered in a week or so. Amber was also in the hall. When Amber saw us, she smiled and was very kind but it was very easy to see Nick's shenanigans squicked her out at least as much as it did us.

James Marsters apparently had a reputation for flirting with/hitting on barely legal female fans, he met his now ex-wife (they divorced earlier this year) when she was in her late teens and he was in his early 40s, the majority of his other romantic partners have been half his age or more... Then there's his whole Michelle Trachtenberg thing.

Yeah. Angel was interesting and had his moments, but omfg, his woe is me crap was tedious and stultifying, and Angelus was so over-the-top 'evil' that he was laughable (to me).

I only like the character in bits and bobs, but really really really disliked him with Buffy. He was actually sweet and kinda sympathetic with Cordelia.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What neck though? Not like he has much of one.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Teen me was so obsessed with Angel, both the character and the show (lol even going as far as using him as a cover-crush at school). But I'm pretty sure if I rewatch it now I'd probably hate it.

The opening theme is still a good jam tho.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of the problem was that he was so much more interesting as Angelus! Boreanez is not a great actor, but if you give him something to do, he'll do it properly, so...why cast him as a broody woe-is-me guy?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'd argue that his acting wasn't really that great as Angelus; it was just such a of fresh air after the low energy slog that was Angel. Seriously, if you haven't watched Buffy for a while, skip straight to an Angelus episode. Boreanz is obviously having fun, but he's got all the nuance of a Captain Planet villain.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - IDK, I think the fact that his entire presence as Angelus is so tangibly different than his presence as Angel makes his acting a Angelus at least decent.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT Oh, I'm not arguing he has nuance or is a great actor! But he brought life and energy to the role, which, considering his previous role as Angel, was a huge and refreshing change.

Shame you have such lousy taste, OP.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was not much of a fan of the Buffy/Angel ship, or of Angel the character on Buffy.

That said, Angel the series was far better than Buffy much of the time (at least after the 3rd season of Buffy), that’s when the character began to really shine, and I fucking loathed anytime they tried to crossover, because they just kept rehashing the same boring Buffy/Angel bullshit without acknowledging any of the character growth each of them had in between. So it was only in those instances where I really felt the kind of emotion OP describes.
