I'm so sick of seeing "never name a kid Hermione bc Harry Potter." Bullshit. It's a perfectly good Shakespeare name. It existed as a name before Harry Potter

There's "Hermione" and then there's, idk, "Naruto".

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It did, but a good 80% of people are going to immediately think of Harry Potter.

True. But if you name your kid Hermione, be aware that every person they ever introduce themselves to WILL make a Harry Potter comment, except the rare few who make Shakespeare comments because they're ~highbrow~. If your kids turns out to be confident and outgoing, they may enjoy that their name makes them memorably and starts conversations. But if you turn out to have a shy kid, it will probably bother them daily throughout their childhood.

It's a lot older than that! It's from Ancient Greece, she's the daughter of Menelaus, King of Sparta.

A line the kid will have to have ready any time someone says "Harry Potter!"

Honestly the better line would just be 'who's that?' and never ever drop the ruse. Just eternally act like the entire franchise is some niche thing that you've never heard of.

I have Ariel on my baby name list for either a boy or girl because of Shakespeare, but I don't know if I could go through with using it, especially for a boy, because despite my intentions I know everyone would think of The Little Mermaid.

I know several Ariels ranging from teens to elder millennials, male and female. It's a beautiful name, go for it!
