Well, you weren't exactly wrong, OP - animation does tend to go for blockier lines etc. because it's easier to draw a lot of related frames that flow together that way. It's just more of a side-quality than an essential part of the definition.

But I'm glad you're still thinking through how you define things - that's a really good skill to have.
