My grandma (born in Alabama during the Great Depression) didn't know that her family had been calling her by her middle name all her life, and that she had a completely different first name, until she started going to school and it was suddenly on paperwork and all these strangers were calling her the wrong thing.

She's close to 90 and STILL gets mad about it. Makes it easy to figure out whether someone calling her on the phone actually knows her or not, though, based on the person they ask for.
