I can see it being cringey on a personal level, but all the "won't someone think of the children?!" going on in this thread makes me wonder if some of y'all don't remember being kids. Yeah, if kiddo's got a weird name they'll probably get made fun of for it at some point. And if kiddo has a common name, they'll still get made fun of for it at some point. Hell, when I was 11 I knew a girl named Jennifer Smith who some other girls for some reason decided looked like a boy so they called her Jeffiner for, like, two months. Save up the energy you'd spend on coming up with the least objectionable baby name and use it teach little Catra how to be the kind of kid who'll defy the pack mentality and stick up for Jennifer instead.

This is a good comment. One of the biggest ways to get teased is having your name in a song. Any song. Do you know how many names have a song with them in it? Most of them. And somebody you meet will know that song. I like my name, but when I was a kid I think I'd rather have been asked "Where are your dragons, Khaleesi?" all the time than been sung at.

NAYRT--my name is both super uncommon pretty much everywhere-- the person I was named after is Dutch, I'm in the US, and she said she wasn't sure why her parents picked it as it's not common there either, and neither of us has met another person with it -- but it shows up in a bunch of songs that used to be used in children's talent shows and dance recitals a lot.

Hell, I get strangers singing them over the phone when I answer with my name as an adult. The only time I ever thought it was funny, my then boss told a customer with my name as his surname (also rare) "omg you have to marry (my name) who works here!"

I wasn't working that day but apparently he thought she was nuts.

The number of fucking men who sang "Give me hope, Joanna" at me.

The song was about apartheid in South Africa for christ sake!

Oh, I got that incessantly too. *fistbump of weary solidarity*

Ah, god, the singing.

I love my name, but it's a very common, two-syllable name, meaning it regularly shows up in songs.

I had adults in my extended family teasing me with one old-timey song forever (it's one of my earliest memories), but I was safe from the younger generation doing it... until a super catchy new song came out with my name in the title and got really popular for a few years.

And then I had NO escape, it was one or the other.

Or if you have a name that rhymes easily, because kids WILL capitalize on that. Hell, there was a girl in my grade in elementary school named Anna and she got called "Anna Banana" all the time by the other kids because they thought it was funny.

We had an "Anna the Spanner" because banana doesn't rhyme with it in England lol
