That sucks, but people are TERRIBLE at buying stuff their friends/family sell, unless it's a kid and it's girl scout cookies, because they already know they like those, and nobody wants to let down someone's kid. I completely blow off relatives selling makeup or candles or ugly leggings, though.

Fandom might actually be worse, because people are a.) used to getting free fiction, b.) broke, and (often) c.) cheap.

I have to admit that I've only bought one original book by a fandom friend, and I know for a fact they barely sold any copies, despite being a somewhat popular fandom writer who has thousands of kudos on fanfic. People just often don't want to read original fic by fandom writers, and I don't know for certain why that is. It's almost certainly not personal or an indication that they don't like YOU.

It's pretty obvious to me why - investing emotionally into an original fiction work takes more time and effort than fanfic because you need to get to know new characters and new worlds. And you may not be all that interested in either of those for that particular book.

Fanfic is easy and safe since you know and like everything already. You can immediately dive into plot and action in a way original fiction can't.

Consider how easy it is to get someone in a fandom to read fic in their fandom. Now consider how much harder it would be, in comparison, to get them to join a whole new fandom with you that they've never heard of. Because the latter is what original fiction is asking them to do.

Yep, pretty much this. My experience in both circles exactly.

^ You hit the nail on the head.

I mean, exactly. While I certainly have preferred authors in fandom, that doesn’t mean I am going to read all their stories for other fandoms, LET ALONE pay good money/waste good time to read their original fic. Ultimately, I’m interested in those fics because of the fandom, not the writer.
