The creators have said in interviews that they didn't take the ship seriously when they made the episode, but they didn't have anything against the fans. They thought it was cool that people made so much fanart even though they didn't get it and even asked for fanartists to give them art to feature in the episode. But they said they then came to actually like the ship for real and thought the characters were genuinely a good couple, and they made it official and not-a-joke canon. So the shippers aren't just being delusional when they talk about being supported.

AYRT

Ah, well then I'm glad for the fans that the creators did actually support them. It's a better conclusion than what I'm expecting from the South Park creators.
