man, i've stayed in plenty of toxic communities because i was lonely, didn't have any friends and didn't think i would find any new ones if i left. when you're desperate for human connection you put up with a lot of shit.

Yeah, I understand sticking to toxic friendships and communities just because you feel lonely. It's not healthy nor will get better at any point in the long run, but I get it. Pulling out of any space that feels like the only thing you got is really hard, no matter how toxic it is. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel and you either find other places, make other friends or learn to enjoy your own company through taking up hobbies or learning to do the things you always wanted to on your own, but it's not easy and I don't judge the people who are already in a low place for not being able to get themselves out.

Agreed

Agreed. It can be very hard, that's true. But if it's making you unhappy, you need to cut it loose. And online fandom is one of the easiest things in life to stop doing IMO.

You can't just quit a miserable job, because bills need paying. You can't just leave a relationship because maybe you've got a place together or you've got kids. Even other hobbies might mean losing money on classes or equipment you've paid for, or maybe people are counting on you to be in that play and you can't just walk out.

With online fandom you can just stop. Stop watching, reading. Unfollow, block if necessary.

Sometimes it seems like a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I've definitely put in the time trying to work around drama or just waiting for the source to get kicked out or leave. It doesn't always work and, in that case, yes get some distance but generally you can just curate around the drama.

I ended up leaving a fandom space because it was getting too toxic for me, but it really wasn't easy. For the longest time, that was the only place where I felt accepted and like I could be myself, but we got more and more people stirring up trouble and I started feeling unwanted there. It took me a long time to understand that there was no going back to how it had been before and that was very hard to accept.

Do I know how this feels! There is a lot of toxicity in my fandom, but it's so small there aren't many places to engage. I know people say "enjoy the fics and not the fandom" but what if the fandom is part of what you enjoy? It's hard to leave if it's the only place you can share your interest in your own hyperfixated way.

On the other hand, I've found Fail Fandom Anon to be toxic as hell. People go there to be assholes and it was easy to leave. The Discord is the same way. Who wants to hang around with assholes?
