Re: Unpopular opinions

Here's my unpopular opinion: I wish we'd switch the wording to hating child molesters and/or child abusers. I don't care if people abuse children because they're bored and looking to transgress or for money or to fit in with their billionaire buddies or because they're actually only attracted to children.

Meanwhile, I wish we put a little bit of effort into helping pedophiles not abuse children in the first place. I don't know what that would look like, but I'm kind of worried that doctors/psychiatrists/law makers don't either.

Aren't there plenty of pedophiles who never abuse children, though? Like, I don't have any stats off the top of my head, but I was always under the belief that there are a lot more people who are attracted to children but never act on it than there are people who actually molest children.

Yeah, I have no idea. And I don't know that it's being studied and I'd prefer that it were. I'd like to know real numbers on this. Mostly I just hear a lot of screaming that *could* be coming from QAnon and that shit ain't helping.

Stats? Sure.

Yep. According to the current literature, it's estimated that 1-2% of men have some kind of attraction to minors. As of May 27th, 2020, the number of men on the planet is estimated to be something like 3,776,294,273. So on the lower end, there are 37M (million) who are attracted to minors in some way, and on the upper end it's closer to 75M.

(By the way, the younger the attraction, the rarer it is. So someone who's interested in prepubescent children is rarer than someone who's into teenagers.)

Now, let's look at US statistics. I'm going to be using the Child Maltreatment Statistics for 2019, published on January 14th, 2021 by the Administration for Children & Families. Including duplicate counts (cases in which a child suffered multiple kinds of abuse), the number of CSA victims was 60,927.

(Apropos of nothing: The national rounded number of child maltreatment victims in the United States decreased from 677,000 to 656,000 between federal fiscal years 2018 and 2019.)

Courtesy of Google, it's estimated that there are 161.6M men (or "males," specifically) in the United States, meaning 1.61M to 3.22M have some kind of attraction to minors. Were there a significant correlation with this condition and CSA, you would expect the number of CSA cases to be much higher. Yes, underreporting is likely an issue - but the sheer disparity between 61,000 and one million should speak for itself.

As such, it can generally be concluded that minor attraction and perpetrating abuse have little to do with one another. As someone else said, the abuse of children has much more to do with preying on the weak and vulnerable than it does an inherent attraction (though the two do occasionally overlap).

I'm pretty sure the majority of people who sexually abuse children aren't actually pedophiles (i.e. attracted only to children). It's a crime of power and opportunity.

This right there. Power and opportunity.

Yeah, this right here.

But then, what would we call people who are shipping a 24 year old with a 25 year old!? Or are attracted to a character who appeared as a child in a flashback!?

/sarcasm

I agree with you.
