If the only thing you've heard about this story is that she backed down because she didn't feel good, mentally and emotionally, then I can understand your take. In a theoretical situation where many other people have worked nearly as hard as you have for this event, and you're the strongest part of the team, I don't think it's cool to back out because you're depressed or anxious. I say that as someone who is diagnosed with fairly severe anxiety and depression.

But that's not what happened here. She didn't opt out because she was feeling depressed. She opted out because she was experiencing a health condition that she couldn't just "tough out" until after the event - a health condition that directly and disastrously affected her ability to perform, made it very unlikely that she would be able to do well in the event, and made it all too likely that she would seriously, even permanently injure herself.

Her sitting it out wasn't her being a selfish snowflake. Her sitting it out was her taking one for the team by not dragging them down, and by ensuring she'd still be physically able to compete with them in the future.

Depression and anxiety are absolutely valid reasons to back out.
