TV Tropes assumes the same.

Do you actually, uh, know anything about gymnastics? Or did you read three tweets and decide you're an expert?

1. She didn't damage their chances of winning. She pulled out of the team final because she had already received the lowest score in the rotation on the event she did do, and anticipated that she would continue performing poorly (aka, more poorly than any of her teammates) on the other events. This is obviously completely besides the safety argument, but since you clearly only care about medals-- yeah. She didn't lose them the team gold. She stepped down to allow them to win the team silver.

2. She didn't "reserve her emotional health for the solo competition." She didn't compete in the individual all-around. Sunisa Lee won it. Have you been living under a rock?

3. "Taking a spot and not competing" is precisely the (extremely normal) situation that the team format, including all-arounds and reserve athletes for finals, is for. This is not some crazy unprecedented situation. Athletes have to pull out of competitions all the time. Because Simone pulled out of event finals, MyKayla Skinner was able to compete in the vault final (which she otherwise wouldn't have been) and won a silver medal, and Jade Carey was able to win the gold on floor. No, there are not any other American athletes who were denied the chance to go to Tokyo who would have done better than that.

This is so fucking stupid I can't even believe I spent my time explaining it. What is wrong with you that the concept of "mental health>sports" needs an "argument"?

I don’t go here, but this kid’s what, 13?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you even understand "the mental health > sports argument", if that's what you think

Tarantino's acting is less of a problem than Rodriguez' directing. Seriously, the first half of the movie is phenomenal, the Santanico Pandemonium dance is obviously amazing, and then after that the movie just falls off a cliff.

Not OP, but thanks for taking the time to write all that out. I think more people need to read it. The soundbite version of this story (surprise surprise) doesn't do it justice.

Besides- it's more than just "mental health v. sports" when having too off of an off day can wreck your body. Like gruesome injury and permanent damage...

Yeah. The specific phenomenon is called the twisties, and... having the yips and soldiering on anyway, in lots of other sports, means you lose. Having the yips and soldiering on (in competition conditions, onto hard surfaces) in gymnastics means, very possibly, you die. Which people have, in situations very similar to this. Julissa Gomez, Elena Mukhina-- when the athlete says "I can't do this" and the coach (or public pressure) says "do it anyway," that's when we have fatal injuries.

And yes, maybe Biles could have put together watered-down routines that were safe for her, but most of the difficulty value of her particular style of gymnastics is built with complex flipping/twisting skills, so it's debatable whether that would have been worth it in terms of US medal potential vs. her teammates.

Yes, thank you. What the fuck, OP? What is that first sentence even supposed to mean?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So agreed. He just oozes creepy.

I give some leeway on non-native speakers pronunciation (been there, done that) but when it's something very easily verifiable and easy to say, sorry they need to actually look it up.

I've had to skip podcast episodes because the podcaster wasn't pronouncing some easily verifiable names correctly. They were American pronouncing non-English names so I wasn't expecting perfection but some of them were just so wrong I couldn't listen to it anymore.

And I'm American and the names were in language I don't speak but they were very well-known names! I even looked it up later to make sure I wasn't Mandela Effecting myself and nope, easy to look up and pronounced how I'd heard it before.

This ruined a couple really interesting historical list Youtube channels for me. It seemed like they were almost deliberately mispronouncing at times.

I'm the opposite. I don't like the first half of the movie. It only starts getting good at the dance.
