Never heard of this book but it looks super interesting. I'll check it out!

The books are on my to-get list. My book budget is just nil right now. :(

My secret is that I really, really hated Binti. I felt like it threw out any semblance of logical motivation/behavior for every other character to make the MC So Cool Save The Galaxy.

Not to raise the dreaded specter of mary sue, but I don't enjoy books that incoherent when it's white girls at the center either.

People keep saying Okorafor is good, though. Is this better?

Haven't read Binti, so I couldn't really say if they're better or not. But they sound different enough that it might be worth checking the first book out from the library and seeing where it goes.

Same.

I read Akata Witch first and was really looking forward to Binti but had the same reaction as you. So yes, read Akata Witch, it's very different and much better.

DA - have you read Remote Control? I can’t compare writing style because I haven’t read all three, but tone/genre seems about halfway between Binti and Akata Witch.

never read binti, really liked akata witch, and the sequel was pretty good too. it really scratched that young-adult bildungsroman itch but without standard sword and sorcery trappings so it felt pretty new and cool. i can guess that binti has the problem okorafor’s got in the second book of “wtf is this pacing” though, lol
