I really want to read your fic op. I don't care if you are a virgin, I cod really use some decent erotica in my life right now.

Same hat!

I'm not at all interested in engaging in sex... but I've read enough about it, both fiction and non-fiction, that I do feel competent-- and the 'thank god, someone who knows what they're talking about' comments on my erotica speak to that.

I mean, I've never fought a demon or been to space, either, so like... emotional truth, a reasonable amount of research, and a can-do attitude are always going to beat 'write what you know' in my book. Get down with your bad self, fellow virgin eroticist.

Thinking here . . . I’ve had sex in my stories about fighting demons, and sex in my stories about going to space, but I’ve never had all three. I guess that would be Doom porn?

Hah yes, I used to say I researched sex the same way I researched blacksmithing. I have no intention of actually doing it but my characters will, so I should have them do it right.

I don't know if I've ever had people say of my stuff "finally someone who knows what they're writing about!" but at least some have said it's hot. Which is probably just as important, or maybe more so, for fandom purposes. (I mean I was going to say "I'm not trying to please real people, just fictional characters" but the readers are real people who can be pleased I guess!)

Hello fellow fanfic-writing virgin :D

I quite like the image you chose for this secret, OP. It just amuses me. But that's awesome about your writing skills! Definitely drop your fic links if you're comfortable with it.

I've never kissed anybody and don't have any sexual experience, so I always feel like I've got no right to write scenes like those for my fics. I really shouldn't though because I also don't have any experience flying a spaceship and I've written about that.

Congrats on the compliments and thanks for sharing this secret! I hope it helps other people feel more confident giving smut writing a go without necessarily needing “hands-on” experience.

Learning how to write good smut FROM good smut is as valid as learning to write idk, an accurate portrayal of farming from a good farming fic.

When I had limited sexual experience I bought into the idea that you needed to have done the full works to know how to write good smut. Let me tell you, several years of experience later...it's a lie. And I'm amazed when I see people still arguing that you need to have had sex to write it properly.

I've read some AWFUL sex scenes from people who mention they are married and/or have kids in their author's notes. So presumably they've had actual real life sex. My attitude is: even the sexually experienced aren't immune from writing cliche god awful Insert Thing A into Part B porn. I know this is low hanging fruit but the woman who wrote 50 Shades presumably had sex and the quotes I've seen from her sex scenes are basically anti-horny "congrats, my vagina is dust" etc.

There are so many things in writing that I'll never directly experience but if I can get into the head of my characters and do the research, my readers will barely mention it, and definitely not say it matters. I don't get why there's so much gatekeeping nonsense over sex like that's any different.

As a mid-thirties ace gal, this secret makes me happy. I've only written a very tiny amount of smut and I'm not sure how good it is, but it's nice to hear that other people are out there writing good smut without hands-on experience.

The frustrating thing is that, if I had had sex, I would probably be deliberately making unrealistic choices a lot of the time, because I'm pretty sure the smut I tend to find hot is very idealized. But I hate the thought of writing unrealistic smut without knowing it's unrealistic. I'm constantly looking up things like, "How much precome do men actually produce?" I already know that in my fic I'm going to write that he was so turned on there was a very visible spot on the front of his gray boxers. I don't care if it's unrealistic; I'm doing it! But I still feel the need to know whether it's unrealistic or not.

Any recs??

OP, while you probably can't link your fic, I'd love to read it! That and/or the fics you have served as tutors for you!

Love the secret, and while I've never posted my smut, i too stand right there with you with the zero experience lol

(Anonymous) 2021-08-23 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yes OP, keep doing you! The spaceship analogies ITT are also a great reminder that hands on experience is an arbitrary criteria for good writing.

Mid 30s smut fic writer and I'm also a clueless virgin. I get comments of "your smut is hot!" and it makes me proud.
