Recently I realized that the reason my favorite character from Harry Potter was Snape was because of all the fanfiction I read at the time while the books were still being published.
All the fics that I enjoyed had written him as a distinctively handsome person and as a likable character; pretty much the furthest thing from what was actually written in the books.

I applaud your honesty, at least. Going off of what I remember very vaguely of the books, I wanted to like Snape because of the half-blood prince parts, but being shitty to kids rubs me the wrong way.

I mean, my favorite character is Snape as well, but tbh I'm mostly interested in the spywork and war aspect of his character, which makes for a VERY different experience from HP fans who mostly focus on the Hogwarts side of HP. Like, so much so that whenever I say even the most mildly positive thing about Snape as a character (usually in the vein of "spying on a mind-reading evil Nazi wizard is both interesting and pretty badass"), I'll get a billion people telling me I'm a terrible person for liking a complete bully of a teacher. Like, did I ever say he WASN'T an asshole teacher? Jfc.
