About thirty five years ago in my first year at school, we got graded at the end of the semester (among other things) for whether or not we got along with other people. I was bullied, so my grade was "Needs guidance". So with this insult upon injury I learned at the age of seven that you just can't get along with everybody.

i've had this happen. i really vibed with my group, except this one guy who found really offputting and didn't like the roleplaying style of. i complained a lot about him (and was pretty petty too, doubting the things he told us about himself)

we've become better and better friends over the course of two years and i really appreciate him now. that is not because i have gained some secret knowledge about him or anything, it's just that we're familiar with each other's vibes now. we even sometimes voice chat outside of group activities, just for the fun of it

so maybe that will happen to you too! i'd encourage you not to throw in the towel, especially if objectively you can tell she's not bad a person

The biggest thing, really, is that we're the only two women in this group at the moment and we have a ton in common (on paper) and I was really hoping we'd get along. But then we can't talk about my favorite stuff because I'd feel like I was attacking her.

I've been thinking about this a lot since I asked for the secret maker's boon. The thing that connects all the stuff that bugs me is she doesn't believe what I say unless/until someone else agrees with me. Or she half listens to me and then corrects what I wasn't saying. I don't really know how to talk about it? I asked her to just trust me as the DM a couple of times and then she'll praise me a bunch for a few sessions but that's not what I'm after you know? And it's not even always rules stuff, but like how old Alan Rickman was when the Harry Potter movies were made (NOT 28) and classic quotes by historical figures (Karl Marx was very snarky) and who wrote a specific Forgotten Realms book (Gyagax didn't write everything ever!) It's not that she's wrong and I'm right, it's that I'm right and she just dismisses me unless I push the issue and look it up for her or someone else agrees with me.

But yeah, I give myself permission to be an acquaintance now. I was really bending over backwards to try and make myself into her friend until the character thing. I can stop now and not feel guilty.

Are you in K-pop fandom generally? Because I honestly have no issue avoiding these guys and I'm not even trying, but I also don't follow any K-pop artists as people/bands, I just like some of the music.

I mean, this sounds less like them and more like you need to do some unfollowing/muting/blocking. It's very easy to ignore their news if you want that or are willing to put some systems in place but if it wasn't them it would be another kpop group dominating, overexposed and annoying you it seems.

As a Kpop fan (multi-stan), I generally am able to escape most BTS stuff. But then again, I stick to my groups and my main group is relatively small and trying their best to be unproblematic so we don't really dip into the hate game with any other idols.

With that said, I can understand the general distaste for BTS. They're regarded as this positive, wonderful image of Kpop in Western culture but they're just another run-of-the-mill actually really problematic group due to being owned by a label just as problematic. Kpop is a cog in the capitalist machine. In no ways can you consume Kpop "ethically". ARMY has a tendency to be too overly defensive of what the group does, and they get away with a lot. I think BTS is capable of good things and they have done good things, but I am of the opinion it's for the most part cynical. They're making a lot of bank and that's all that matters. The BTS members aren't perfect angels who only advocate for positivity and love. They're human beings selling an image and that's good that they can create positivity but the cult-like following they get is really problematic. There is no accountability to their bad actions. I saw one incident where one member grab a fan's hair aggressively...it left a bad taste in my mouth. It was brushed off that the group and that fan have a "deep" connection and it was playful...what I saw told a different story and that was enough to make me feel cautious about BTS. And I know this is only one incident but given how it was handled and so quickly brushed off (and given how big ARMY is), there are way more questionable occurances that have happened and gone unnoticed and unreported. It can be said for any Kpop act, but it's not hard to say that the more money a group makes the less accountability there is. There's a lot of hands on deck and a lot of money at stake, think about how much will slip through the cracks and how many people will be willing to cover up some questionable/bad things that happen behind the scenes.

Don't put these idols on pedestals. They're human beings and if they're treated like they're unstoppable/untouchable they will likely do really shitty things and those things can catch up to them.

Time to curate your feeds a bit better. I even like BTS but since I haven't really liked their new releases, I haven't kept up with them and I don't hear much about them. Unless you're in Korean, the West seems pretty content to just have them as the occasional music guest spot.
So you don't like ARMYs. That's valid but also pretty avoidable.

Hmmm yes! I prefer the classic Than/Zag but Hades just has so much shipping potential and there should be something for everyone in it. Secret OP, do you have any headcanons or prompt ideas you'd like to see?

Chinese person here albeit someone born in North America. I'm not quite qualified to talk about mainland Chinese but there still exists very bad blood about the Japanese from those of older generations. Particularly those whose grandparents/parents had to flee from the Japanese in WW2.

I have friends whose parents vehemently hate the Japanese and in my parents generation you would have been socially isolated if you married a Japanese person. It's less so in the current generation now but I imagine it's a bigger thing in the mainland.

Another issue is that Japan has never apologized or even acknowledged the war crimes perpetrated by them ever. Talking to some Japanese people, it's not even a part of the history they are taught and it's not something that is widely talked about it in Japan. Add into the fact that the Chinese government encourages people to remember Nanking and the atrocities it's still pretty vivid in people's minds.

To put in perspective it's akin to taking a tourist pic at a place commemorating Nazis. A little less extreme than that but it's the closest western equivalency I can think of. So if the guy is getting his career tanked it makes a lot of sense....

i haven't rewatched it, but i would suspect you're just picking up on the stuff that was already there. it's easy to get swept up in a show and handwave the details while it is running and there is drama and plot and what will happen next.

Heh. Well, at least they were honest. I'm sure there are plenty of fanfic writers who toy with the idea of trying to file off the serial numbers and publish their fic as original, and a lot of them underestimate how easy that'd be or how much of an audience would even be interested if it's not attached to the fandom.

Er, just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made.
