Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

My brother and his wife are having another child in October.

They are naming the child a certain name that appears in a popular video game franchise my brother and I both have played since we were children. He knows this particular character is not just my favorite franchise character, but of any video game. And he picked this name for his child. (Same spelling and everything so there's no mistake).

I have written graphic noncon of this character.

He doesn't know THAT.

How am I supposed to have this kid in my life when I know that?

I am so at a loss as of what to do.

I think your brain will eventually separate out and code switch. I think you'll be okay.

We all say that fan fic is not real life and we all know that. You just get to live with it now.

I'm sorry, this seems like an uncomfortable situation. But I am also laughing at you.

That's fair because it is pretty funny -OP

A character I have read reams of smut about and seen graphic fanart of has a common enough name that I've had several coworkers with it. Years ago I had two supervisors with the same names as my OTP.

If every time you hear a person's name the first thing you think of is the graphic smut fic you wrote about a character with the same name, that's kind of weird, unless maybe the character's name was made up for a porn sim or something, so you knew for certain they were named for a character that only exists to be fap fuel.

It is a "real" name, just not in my country. I have never met anyone with this name or heard of anyone named it besides the video game character and a 19th century existentialist philosopher. (However, I have just googled it and apparently there's a cartoon character with the same name from a recent cartoon my brother's kids love so maybe that's where they decided on it from.)

But my first thought being the character I've shipped for sixteen years when I hear the name doesn't seem weird or overly fetishy like you're trying to imply? -OP

NAYRT

OP of comment below this one, and after reading this I just have to say I'm 99% sure I know what the name is. Heh. Not sure how I feel about them choosing that name if it's after the cartoon character.

I think I gave too many clues but it's not like the baby is going to be googleable based on the name alone so... Like I said, it's a nice name I just feel weird about it. -OP

Okay that is one of my absolute favorite games ever, then. Good taste, you (but sorry about your problem)

A lot of people (including me) have named their own pets after characters they've written or read porn about, and we're fine. Is a kid that different? It seems like this is probably something you're overthinking way too much, or else you have some very weird hangups.

As an aside, did your brother pick that name in honor of you because it's your favorite character? I think that's really sweet of him, although I suppose it would have been better to ask first.

He did not pick the name because of me. His first child is named a variation of another character from the same game and I've just learnt there's a character in a newer cartoon that his kids love that has this name too so he and his wife probably thought of it after hearing it there I guess? She loves the name and has nothing to do with video games so she didn't get it from there. It matches the pattern of their other children's names so it's not a bad fit, it's just... awkward for me? -OP

You'll be fine. Your brain will differentiate between the two easily once niece/nephew is born and you hear the name in the context of the kid.

My little cousin (15 years younger than me) and a character from a (very explicit) porn webcomic I used to read years ago have the same name. Same spelling and pronunciation and everything. Due to being a porn comic there was a lot of panels where the name was panted/moaned mid-coitus.

It didn't click for me until two years ago that the name was the same. I wasn't even reading the comic or thinking of my cousin, it just randomly hit me.

Think of it this way: statistically speaking, lots of people have had sex with partners with really common names. These people will then have likely had contact with a child that also has that common name. And these people have been fine interacting with the children as well.
