I agree with every word that Sarah Z said in her video "The Story of Proshippers vs Antis". I think anyone who labels themself a proshipper or an anti has no understanding of nuance.

Nah. I know Sarah has had some bad experiences with proshippers, but all the label means to most people who use it is that you're against cyberbullying (over fandom preferences, specifically, but also in general). It's like dismissing feminism and everyone who calls themselves a feminist because there are some bad feminists, when feminism actually just means you want gender equality. I make this comparison because "proshipping" and "feminism" should be the default stance of everyone. They're specific facets of being a decent person, and their opposites can't be both-sides'ed with them.

No, that side is just a fucking stupid and can't see it because they're so embroiled with fighting 'THE ENEMY' and seeing themselves as perpetual victims. No one on either side 'wins' in this, everyone is too over-invested and needs to get offline for a few hours at least.

I take it that you didn't watch the video? Sarah Z did address this very same comment about how it's all facets of a person who understands fiction's impact on society, both in terms of it not harming people (most fanfic), or sometimes harming people (The Turner Diaries).

Another part that you should take to mind from the video is how Sarah Z said that proshipper and anti is just modern day broadstrokes taken in order to write off a person entirely. We moved past many historical discriminations (my own words, not Sarah Z's), but the urge to broadstroke, stereotype, and assign a whole list of qualities (such as makes death threats, enjoys pedo shit, literally committing genocide, etc.) to people in fandom based the tiniest possible reasons hasn't gone away.

Lastly, I think that you disproved your own point about "can't both-sides", because you let the 'proshippers' who harassed Sarah Z off the hook by saying "It's like dismissing feminism and everyone who calls themselves a feminist because there are some bad feminists, when feminism actually just means you want gender equality" (essentially, a loud minority), while also saying that every single anti is bad because of a loud minority.

I agree with you, OP. I felt very badly about how a lot of Sarah Z's tweets were taken out of context and attacked by every single person. It makes me feel like no matter what if I try to put myself out there, I'd be hated by at least one person on the internet and I don't know what to do about that. Sarah Z saying that the human brain isn't meant to handle modern day social media rings true to me.

Yup. I'd be a 'anti' or a 'pro-shipper' purely depending on who I happen to be talking to at the time. Anyone seriously defining themselves with either binary needs to get off the internet for a bit and do literally anything else.

It doesn't have to be a big part of your identity lmao. Do you agree that telling people to kill themselves because of what they ship is wrong? Congrats you're a proshipper, that's all it takes. You don't have to go around talking about it all the time, that's just what you are.

You should see the death threats that Sarah Z got from proshippers lmao. Also, fuck off, I don't think that jerkin' it to certain types of porn makes you a bad person, but also I don't want to associate with you based on your ships and bad takes. That's bulldhit and you bloody well know it.

That's exactly what happened to Sarah Z. She made tweets mildly disagreeing with the concept of an adult dunking on a 15 year old over this culture war, and was accused of being an anti. As well as being harassed and accused of condoning every horrible thing under the sun that antis have done. She can't even post innocuous tweets about her personal life without being attacked by these people. And they even brought Bryan Fuller into this, while complaining that Sarah is misusing a large platform.

It's not bullsit, and you'd know that if you watched the video. It's frequent behavior from the most militant proshippers to accuse anyone who disagrees with them on anything to be antis. Even if the disagreement has nothing to do with being against proshipper beliefs. There was even a part of the video where Sarah shows proshippers throwing other proshippers who were POC under the bus as "anti-lites" for feeling like art of a character wearing a Confederate Flag bikini crossed a line.

I think proshipper ideology is good, so it sucks to see these militant assholes make the cause look bad by behaving this way. Save these accusations for actual antis(they're not shy about professing their views, and are thus easy to find), and stop acting like there's no bad individual proshippers just because antis are worse.

Very much agree. I though that video was extremely spot-on and well made.
