Chinese person here albeit someone born in North America. I'm not quite qualified to talk about mainland Chinese but there still exists very bad blood about the Japanese from those of older generations. Particularly those whose grandparents/parents had to flee from the Japanese in WW2.

I have friends whose parents vehemently hate the Japanese and in my parents generation you would have been socially isolated if you married a Japanese person. It's less so in the current generation now but I imagine it's a bigger thing in the mainland.

Another issue is that Japan has never apologized or even acknowledged the war crimes perpetrated by them ever. Talking to some Japanese people, it's not even a part of the history they are taught and it's not something that is widely talked about it in Japan. Add into the fact that the Chinese government encourages people to remember Nanking and the atrocities it's still pretty vivid in people's minds.

To put in perspective it's akin to taking a tourist pic at a place commemorating Nazis. A little less extreme than that but it's the closest western equivalency I can think of. So if the guy is getting his career tanked it makes a lot of sense....

People don't care if it was deliberate or not. It's still a bad look and considering that a lot of pop stars are involved politically with the government one way or another specifically in China particularly, it's honestly not a surprise there's huge outcry about it.

If it's not the fans of this generation who don't care as much about Japanese war crimes, sponsors would immediately drop him just for the whole issue.

Welllll it's up to the fans then how they want to deal with it I guess.

The Chinese government has a considerable amount of social control so to go against that or disagree is political, economic and social suicide more or less for the star themselves.

Not to say that there are ways to go against certain bans/censors or that people blindly follow the government in China but I don't see a lot of people caring about the situation to that degree aside from the diehard fans.

I mean its not a surprising move in western society either. Just look at cancel culture. If you're arguing that people should care then it's more of an individualistic argument. Some people care about distinctions, a good vocal majority don't. Should people care? Ideally yes but a lot of folk like being outraged and yelling about it despite the actual intent of the subject in question.

DA I've been there, and there's a park outside where people often take wedding pictures, and I think that's where the photos are. You have to pass under the famous iron torii (gate) to actually enter the shrine. But OP of this thread is completely correct about the lack of education about Japan's role as an aggressor in WWII let alone the horrific war crimes they committed. And the Yasukuni shrine literally deifies some of those war criminals.

Deliberate? Probably not. Incredibly dumb? Yes.

In this day in age, it's a bit rich for China to feel like this about anyone given what they're doing.

You are completely right! How dare the older generation remember all the things done to their parent, right? The Japanese don't care so they shouldn't either.

You know that's not what AYRT meant. They meant that China is(arguably) just as bad today. At least the government is anyway.

Nobody is defending the horrific ways the Japanese tortured and oppressed the Chinese and Korean people during WW2. Or how Japan has refused to take responsibility for that at all. And in that way, it's perfectly understandable for Chinese people to feel a grudge.

But the government as a whole? They're not without atrocities either.

I mean, they celebrated the 100th anniversary of their party this year with massive amounts of pomp and circumstance even though that regime cost tens of millions of people their lives. Hypocrisy is kinda their thing.

It's right, it's wrong... it doesn't matter. If you're a public figure, you don't kick the nationalist hornet nest, it's simple as that. In any country, but especially not in countries ruled by famously authoritarian regimes.

If he really posed there and was caught on camera, that's career suicide at the very least. For decades now the Chinese government has not once failed to kick up a stink every time a *Japanese* politician has visited that shrine. How does a Chinese celebrity not know this?

It sounds like it was an unplanned (by him, at least) photo, so what you’re really saying is that he should have stayed out of Japan altogether unless he was willing to keep a map in his head of all the government-mandated no-no spots. Which probably would have been the smart move, actually.

Even if I were a normal citizen, I'd probably steer clear of this place, let alone someone involved in the media and therefore dependent on the CCP's good graces. I don't know how he even ended up there since it's not exactly on the typical tourist beat. Pretty weird.
